Diaz wins weight, named Outstanding wrestler
VAN NUYS — Highland senior Naomi Diaz won her weight class and was named the overall outstanding Wrestler at the Birmingham Tournament on Saturday.
Diaz won the 150 pound weight class.
Highland senior Bricia Aguilera, a first-year wrestler, won the 111-pound weight class.
Highland finished third overall as a team in the tournament.
Boys Soccer Eagle Cup
LANCASTER — The Paraclete boys soccer team won the Eagle Cup Division 2 championship on Saturday at the Lancaster National Soccer Center.
The Spirits (4-1) won two matches on Saturday to finish 4-0 at the tournament.
Paraclete defeated Mammoth 10-0 in its first match, as Matthew Martel scored four goals and Matthew Hong had three for the Spirits.
Leo Garcia added two goals, Jake Fuqua finished with one and Ivan Hernandez had two assists.
Hong had five goals in Paraclete’s second match, an 8-1 win over the Academy of Academic Excellence.
Martel finished with two goals and Hernandez and Nick Barrios both had one goal apiece.
“The team really grew over the last four games and we played really well,” Paraclete coach John Toper said. “This gives us good momentum going into league play next week.”
Paraclete will play Viewpoint on Tuesday at the LNSC.
Wrestling Newbury Park Invitational
NEWBURY PARK — Three Highland boys wrestlers finished in the top five of their weight class at the Newbury Park Tournament on Saturday.
Sophomore Robert Estrada led the Bulldogs by finishing third at 113 pounds, starting the tournament at the No. 4 seed in his weight class.
Estrada defeated his opponent by three points in the third-place match and had lost to that same wrestler in the Masters Meet last season by one point.
Freshman Jordan Zavala finished fifth at 126 pounds, after placing fifth in a tournament last weekend.
Junior Kevin Robeldo placed fifth at 160 pounds.
“It’s a really tough tournament,” Highland coach
Tim DeVestern said. “At the end of the day, I was really happy with how things went. It was a huge improvement from last season to this season as individuals.”
Highland will host Antelope Valley in a Golden League match on Wednesday and will travel to the Mann Classic at Marina High School on Friday and Saturday.
Boys Basketball Paraclete Showcase
LANCASTER – The Paraclete boys basketball team capped the Tom’s Famous Family Restaurants Basketball Showcase at Paraclete High at Saturday with a 77-66 win over Palmdale.
Nolan Boffman led the Spirits (5-0) with 21 points, Amado Coleman added 16, JC Anthony finished with 10 points and Myles Rowley added seven points for Paraclete, which led 61-31 after three quarters.
“It was a good win,” Paraclete coach Newton Chelette said. “It was a really great team effort. They played unselfish.”
Paraclete will play at Desert on Tuesday.
In other showcase results: Eastside defeated Tehachapi 66-52 and Burroughs-Ridgecrest beat Littlerock 64-43.
