VAN NUYS — High­land se­nior Naomi Diaz won her weight class and was named the over­all out­stand­ing Wrestler at the Birmingham Tour­na­ment on Satur­day.

Diaz won the 150 pound weight class.

High­land se­nior Bri­cia Aguil­era, a first-year wrestler, won the 111-pound weight class.

High­land fin­ished third over­all as a team in the tour­na­ment.

Boys Soc­cer Ea­gle Cup

LAN­CASTER — The Par­a­clete boys soc­cer team won the Ea­gle Cup Divi­sion 2 cham­pi­onship on Satur­day at the Lan­caster Na­tional Soc­cer Cen­ter.

The Spir­its (4-1) won two matches on Satur­day to fin­ish 4-0 at the tour­na­ment.

Par­a­clete de­feated Mam­moth 10-0 in its first match, as Matthew Martel scored four goals and Matthew Hong had three for the Spir­its.

Leo Gar­cia added two goals, Jake Fuqua fin­ished with one and Ivan Hernandez had two as­sists.

Hong had five goals in Par­a­clete’s sec­ond match, an 8-1 win over the Academy of Aca­demic Ex­cel­lence.

Martel fin­ished with two goals and Hernandez and Nick Bar­rios both had one goal apiece.

“The team re­ally grew over the last four games and we played re­ally well,” Par­a­clete coach John Toper said. “This gives us good mo­men­tum go­ing into league play next week.”

Par­a­clete will play Viewpoint on Tues­day at the LNSC.

Wrestling Newbury Park In­vi­ta­tional

NEWBURY PARK — Three High­land boys wrestlers fin­ished in the top five of their weight class at the Newbury Park Tour­na­ment on Satur­day.

Sopho­more Robert Estrada led the Bull­dogs by fin­ish­ing third at 113 pounds, start­ing the tour­na­ment at the No. 4 seed in his weight class.

Estrada de­feated his op­po­nent by three points in the third-place match and had lost to that same wrestler in the Masters Meet last sea­son by one point.

Fresh­man Jor­dan Zavala fin­ished fifth at 126 pounds, af­ter plac­ing fifth in a tour­na­ment last week­end.

Ju­nior Kevin Ro­beldo placed fifth at 160 pounds.

“It’s a re­ally tough tour­na­ment,” High­land coach

Tim DeVestern said. “At the end of the day, I was re­ally happy with how things went. It was a huge im­prove­ment from last sea­son to this sea­son as in­di­vid­u­als.”

High­land will host An­te­lope Val­ley in a Golden League match on Wed­nes­day and will travel to the Mann Clas­sic at Ma­rina High School on Fri­day and Satur­day.

Boys Bas­ket­ball Par­a­clete Show­case

LAN­CASTER – The Par­a­clete boys bas­ket­ball team capped the Tom’s Fa­mous Fam­ily Restau­rants Bas­ket­ball Show­case at Par­a­clete High at Satur­day with a 77-66 win over Palmdale.

Nolan Boff­man led the Spir­its (5-0) with 21 points, Amado Cole­man added 16, JC An­thony fin­ished with 10 points and Myles Row­ley added seven points for Par­a­clete, which led 61-31 af­ter three quar­ters.

“It was a good win,” Par­a­clete coach New­ton Chelette said. “It was a re­ally great team ef­fort. They played un­selfish.”

Par­a­clete will play at Desert on Tues­day.

In other show­case re­sults: East­side de­feated Te­hachapi 66-52 and Bur­roughs-Ridge­crest beat Littlerock 64-43.
