Marauders defeat Rio Hondo in OT

WHITTIER — The Antelope Valley College men’s basketball team forced overtime against Rio Hondo College and came out on top with a 90-83 victory on Friday night.

The Marauders (4-8) were down by 10 points with three minutes to play and tied the game with three seconds left after Tyriq Perry knocked down 1 of 2 free throws.

Justin Hill led AVC in points with 20, while Habib Arogundade had a solid game all around with 19 points, nine rebounds and five steals.

AVC point guard Mekhi Smith recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds and added three steals and seven assists.

The Marauders are off for the holidays and pick up play Jan. 2 in the MiraCosta College Tournament.

Boys Basketball Lancaster 80, AV High 38

LANCASTER — The Lancaster boys basketball team defeated Antelope Valley 80-38 in the final Golden League game before winter break on Friday night.

The Eagles (7-2, 5-1 GL) led 21-5 after the first quarter.

“We got a lead and basically kept it throughout the game,” Lancaster coach

Sid Melvin said.

Jordan Roach led the Eagles with 19 points, while Malcolm Hodges followed with 15, Aaron Rodriguez scored 13 and Kaelin Smith added 10.

“It was a total team effort tonight,”

Melvin said.

Lancaster will play in the San Gabriel Tournament starting on Thursday.

Paraclete 68, Holy Martyrs 55

LANCASTER — The Paraclete boys basketball team defeated Holy Martyrs 68-55 in a non-league game on Friday.

Amado Coleman recorded a double-double of 24 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Spirits (10-1), who just got done with finals yesterday.

“It’s a good win during final exams,” Paraclete coach Newton Chelette said.

Nolan Boffman followed Coleman with 17 points and JC Anthony added 10 points and six blocks.

The Spirits start play in the Ventura Tournament on Thursday.

Highland 59, Palmdale 49

PALMDALE — The Highland boys basketball team defeated Palmdale 59-49 in a Golden League game on Friday.

Darius Wilson led the Bulldogs (8-4, 4-2 GL) with 14 points, while Marcus Hill and Hector Page added 13 points apiece for a balanced effort.

“They did a great job scouting us, but we were still able to defend them and play our defensive game,” Palmdale coach Greg Slade said. “We forced them into tough shots.”

Phil Lowe led the Falcons (6-7, 3-3) with 16 points and was 3-for-3 in 3-pointers, while Sam Caldwell put in 12 points.

Slade said Stanford Harmon fouled out with about six minutes left in the game, which led to opportunit­ies for Highland.

“There’s some work we can do, adjustment­s we can make,” Slade said.

Palmdale plays in the San Gabriel Valley Classic on Thursday, while Highland starts play in the Hart Holiday Classic on Thursday.

Eastside 69, Knight 59

PALMDALE — The Eastside boys basketball team rallied to defeat Knight 69-59 in a Golden League game on Friday.

“It was a good game, we were down pretty much the entire first half,” Eastside coach Cisco Munoz said. “The kids played together, didn’t pay attention to the score and … came out with the win.”

Aubrey Pender led the Lions (6-3, 4-1 GL) with 26 points, while Nathan Anderson added 24 points and rebounded well.

“Nate Anderson played a great game,” Munoz said. “James Scott contribute­d a lot on defense, rebounding, getting the ball out to the open guys. He set the tempo of the game in the second half.”

The Lions trailed as much as 13 points in the first half, before cutting the deficit to five before halftime. They took the lead in the fourth quarter and finished strong.

Eastside will play in the Hart Tournament starting Thursday, while Knight plays at Hart on Jan. 2.

Saddleback Valley Chr. 73, Palmdale Aerospace 36

PALMDALE — The Palmdale Aerospace Academy lost to Saddleback Valley Christian 73-36 in a non-league game on Friday.

TPAA coach Keith Bennett said the Griffins (4-10) committed too many turnovers and defensive mistakes, which led to a “frustratin­g night.”

“They’re a good team, but we made it real easy on them,” Bennett said.

Palmdale Aerospace plays at Valley Torah in a Heritage League game tonight.

Boys Soccer Highland 2, Palmdale 2

PALMDALE — The Highland boys soccer team scored two goals in the final 10 minutes against Palmdale to earn a 2-2 tie in Golden League play on Friday.

The game was scoreless at halftime, but Palmdale took a 2-0 lead after being awarded two penalty kicks in the first 1520 minutes of the second half, according to Highland coach Lemuel Galvao.

With 10 minutes left in the game, Adrian Rodriguez scored the first goal for the Bulldogs (2-2-1 GL), heading in a cross from Andrew Cobb.

The equalizer came on another cross from Cobb to Christian Vasquez, who slid the ball right by the Falcons’ goalkeeper with two minutes left.

“It was an exciting game,” Galvao said. “I’m really proud of my guys, they really never quit. They just turn it up.”

Gerardo Xilonzochi­lt recorded three saves in goal in the first half for Highland, while Brian Sanchez posted two saves in the second half.

The Bulldogs and Falcons (4-1-2, 3-1-2 GL) don’t play again until league games resume on Jan. 15.

Mammoth 1, Rosamond 0

ROSAMOND — The Rosamond boys soccer team’s four-game winning streak came to an end with a non-league, 1-0 loss to Mammoth on Friday.

“We were holding them and we were doing well, we just couldn’t get it in the back of the net,” Rosamond coach Miguel Guillen said.

Mammoth, which will join the High Desert League next year, according to Guillen, scored at the end of the first half.

Alex Rivas recorded four saves for the Roadrunner­s (4-4), while the Mammoth goalkeeper had nine saves.

The Roadrunner­s will have two weeks off before hosting their third annual tournament Jan. 3-4.

Tehachapi 2, Paraclete 1

TEHACHAPI — The Paraclete boys soccer team lost a tough match 2-1 to Tehachapi on Friday.

Matthew Martel scored the lone goal for the Spirits (5-2-1) in the 20th minute on an assist from Nick Barrios. The goal gave Paraclete a 1-0 lead.

Tehachapi scored in the 33rd minute to tie the game and went ahead 2-1 on a goal in the final seconds of the first half.

Paraclete goalkeeper Logan Reese had 11 saves, while Daniel Burgos played strong defense for the Spirits, who will play in the Rosamond tournament Jan. 3-4.
