Parks plan plenty of wintertime festivitie­s

Winter fun is on tap at three area Los Angeles County parks this holiday season, with free snow days and special activities as part of the department’s Parks After Dark program.

The festivitie­s begin this weekend as part of the Parks After Dark program during the holiday season, when schools are not in session.

This Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation program offers free activities and holiday-themed events for all ages at parks facilities open late during the school vacation period.

The programs run from 5 to 9 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays and from 2 to 6 p.m. on Saturdays until Jan. 4.

Activities vary and cover all ages, including everything from cookie decorating to sports tournament­s, craft projects to scavenger hunts.

Area parks participat­ing in Parks After Dark are Jackie Robinson Park, 8773 East Ave. R in Littlerock; George Lane County Park, 5520 West Ave. L-8; and Stephen Sorensen Park, 16801 East Ave. P in Lake Los Angeles.

The fun continues at George Lane Park today, with the Winter Won

derland Festival and Carnival from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This free event will feature carnival games, jumpers, refreshmen­ts and crafts.

As an added treat, snow days are on tap at George Lane and Stephen Sorensen parks.

The parks will be turned into snowy winter wonderland­s, as truckloads of snow are piled to play in at the parks and other activities, food and games will round out the family-friendly events.

“It’s Always Snowy in the AV” is the theme at George Lane Park from 5 to 9 p.m. Jan. 2.

Snow will return for a final holiday wrap-up from noon to 6 p.m. Jan. 4 with a Cocoa and Cookies snow day at Stephen Sorensen Park.
