Palmdale planners extend permit for motocross track
PALMDALE — A motocross track in an old gravel quarry won approval for another 10 years of operation from the Planning Commission.
The Los Angeles County Raceway MX requested a 10-year extension to its conditional use permit for the track at 7010 East Ave. T, which the Commission unanimously approved at its Dec. 12 meeting.
The track is on 60 acres South of Avenue T and just East of 70th Street East, within Granite Construction’s
quarry pit.
The site was originally home to the Los Angeles County Raceway, with a drag strip and motocross track from 1964 to August 2010, Senior Planner Carlene Sexton said.
The drag strip was lost in 2007 when Granite begin mining below the race track, while motocross continued to 2010.
The motocross track was re-established within the pit once the quarry was exhausted. The racing takes place about 70 feet below grade in the pit.
The track received a five-year conditional use permit and began operations again in October 2014, according to the staff report.
The two off-road dirt tracks are used for off-road motorcycle racing, practice and events, Sexton said.
The track is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, with practice and non-major event taking place during the week and major events on the weekends, she said.
The operating hours in the permit extension are the same as the existing operation.
The site is served by portable toilets for public use, with one permanent portable toilet located near the entrance which is compliant with Americans with Disabilities Act requirements.
Dust control measures are part of the permit conditions, with three on-site water trucks applying water to the dirt tracks, access road and parking lots as required to minimize dust, according to the staff report.
Safety rules and regulations are required to be posted at the main entrance to the facility, and rules and safety guidelines will be available to hand out to participants, according to the staff report.
