AVC knocks off No. 9 Fresno City

OCEAN­SIDE — The An­te­lope Val­ley Col­lege men’s bas­ket­ball team de­feated the ninth-ranked team in the state, Fresno City 79-76 on Thurs­day in the open­ing day of the MiraCosta Clas­sic.

The Ma­raud­ers (5-8) led Fresno City (10-3) by 11 points at half­time. Fresno City had the ball with one sec­ond re­main­ing, but was called for a five-sec­ond vi­o­la­tion to end the game.

AVC was led in scor­ing by three play­ers off the bench, in­clud­ing Da’Jour Lewis who fin­ished with 25 points and four re­bounds.

Fresh­man Ju­lian Williams fin­ished with 14 points, hit­ting 4-of-10 3-point­ers, Wil­liam Harold had 10 points and three re­bounds and start­ing point guard Habib Aro­gun­dade had six re­bounds and five as­sists.

“It was just a good win for us,” AVC coach John Tay­lor said. “They’re bat­tle tested. We’ve played a lot of good teams.”

AVC will play Santa Ana at 4 p.m. to­day, as the MiraCosta Clas­sic con­tin­ues.

The Ma­raud­ers will start con­fer­ence play on Wed­nes­day, when they host Col­lege of the Canyons at 7 p.m.

Boys Bas­ket­ball Par­a­clete 82, Vasquez 26

LAN­CASTER — The Par­a­clete boys bas­ket­ball team de­feated Vasquez 82-26 on the first day of the 6th an­nual Hunter Dodge AV New Years Clas­sic on Thurs­day.

Nolan Boff­man knocked down five 3-point­ers for the Spir­its (13-3) and fin­ished with a team-high 22 points, while JC An­thony put in 15 points and Amado Cole­man recorded a dou­ble-dou­ble of 14 points and 10 re­bounds.

Par­a­clete’s Mau­rice Wright con­tributed 10 points and Drew Cochran added eight points.

The Spir­its will host Va­len­cia on day two of the tour­na­ment to­day at 7 p.m.
