AVC knocks off No. 9 Fresno City
OCEANSIDE — The Antelope Valley College men’s basketball team defeated the ninth-ranked team in the state, Fresno City 79-76 on Thursday in the opening day of the MiraCosta Classic.
The Marauders (5-8) led Fresno City (10-3) by 11 points at halftime. Fresno City had the ball with one second remaining, but was called for a five-second violation to end the game.
AVC was led in scoring by three players off the bench, including Da’Jour Lewis who finished with 25 points and four rebounds.
Freshman Julian Williams finished with 14 points, hitting 4-of-10 3-pointers, William Harold had 10 points and three rebounds and starting point guard Habib Arogundade had six rebounds and five assists.
“It was just a good win for us,” AVC coach John Taylor said. “They’re battle tested. We’ve played a lot of good teams.”
AVC will play Santa Ana at 4 p.m. today, as the MiraCosta Classic continues.
The Marauders will start conference play on Wednesday, when they host College of the Canyons at 7 p.m.
Boys Basketball Paraclete 82, Vasquez 26
LANCASTER — The Paraclete boys basketball team defeated Vasquez 82-26 on the first day of the 6th annual Hunter Dodge AV New Years Classic on Thursday.
Nolan Boffman knocked down five 3-pointers for the Spirits (13-3) and finished with a team-high 22 points, while JC Anthony put in 15 points and Amado Coleman recorded a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Paraclete’s Maurice Wright contributed 10 points and Drew Cochran added eight points.
The Spirits will host Valencia on day two of the tournament today at 7 p.m.
