Take the fitness challenge
PALMDALE — Residents looking for way to kick-start their fitness goals this year are invited to join the inaugural National Fitness Court Challenge at the Fitness Court at Pelona Vista Park, 37800 Tierra Subida Ave.
The first weigh-in of the year for the “New Year, New You” challenge will be from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday.
The challenge is an opportunity to commit to a healthy lifestyle and set goals such as weight loss, building muscle mass, beginning a new exercise routine or getting back on track, program officials said.
The winner will receive a four-pack of season passes for DryTown Water Park.
Staff will also be at the Fitness Court on Saturday to register participants.
“Come join us as we celebrate our first check in of the year,” Recreation Coordinator Rachel Serrano said. “Park staff will provide free giveaways and host a check-in tent to help you track your progress. We look forward to helping you reach your health goals!”
The Fitness Court, opened to the public and free to use, is a bodyweight circuit-training system, with 30 pieces of equipment arranged in stations that allow for up to 28 people to use it at once.
It includes a series of fullbody exercises that can be completed in just seven minutes.
The system is designed for a range of athletic abilities and to burn more calories than others, according to information from National Fitness Campaign.
A free Fitness Court smartphone app provides instructional videos, class scheduling, challenges and means of marking your progress against other users. There are specific programs in place or development to introduce users to the fitness court, for youth conditioning and older active adults.
Situated at the North end of the park, the court also allows easy access to the park’s walking paths, creating a means of incorporating the workout into other exercise, as well.
The free fitness court is available during regular park hours, from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
The park amenity is the first of its kind in Northern Los Angeles County, but one of 100 new locations installed nationwide by National Fitness Campaign.
The Fitness Court was made possible through funding from Antelope Valley Hospital, the presenting sponsor, as well as The Kaiser Foundation, High Desert Medical Group, The Warnack Foundation, and an NFC Fitness Grant from official music sponsor Fit Radio.
Registration is required and may be found at the city of Palmdale’s website, cityofpalmdale.org/174/Recreation-Culture
