Paraclete defeats Shalhevet in San Fernando Showcase

TAFT — The Paraclete boys basketball team defeated Shalhevet 78-57 in the San Fernando Valley Extravagan­za Showcase at Taft High School on Saturday.

Paraclete coach Newton Chelette was pleased with his team’s effort both on offense and defense.

“It was our best effort of the year,” he said. “I’m very proud of the way they played tonight.”

Amado Coleman led the Spirits (16-4) with 24 points and 11 rebounds, while JC Anthony added 23 points and 10 rebounds and Nolan Boffman contribute­d 14 points.

It was a good final tuneup for Paraclete, which begins Gold Coast League play against Brentwood at home on Thursday.

LANCASTER — The Antelope Valley College men’s basketball team lost on a buzzer beater to West Los Angeles 90-88 on Saturday night in a conference game at Antelope Valley College.

Justin Hill led the Marauders (1-1) with 26 points, three steals and was 6-for-10 shooting 3-pointers, including one with three seconds remaining to tie the game.

West L.A. inbounded the ball with 1.1 seconds remaining and Derrick Woods hit a left-handed hook shot from 6 feet at the buzzer for West L.A., which is ranked No. 17 in the State.

“I thought we had an overtime game going,” AVC coach John Taylor said.

AVC trailed by 10 points with two minutes and 48 seconds remaining after leading at halftime by nine points.

Mekhi Smith finished with 13 points and five assists, Habib Arogundabe had 12 points, six assists and six steals and Da’Jour Lewis finished with 20 points and eight rebounds.

Taylor said the Marauders were even with West L.A. on the boards in the first half, but were outrebound­ed by 11 in the second half.

“They were playing well,” Taylor said of his team’s first-half performanc­e. “(West L.A.) is a really good rebounding team.”

AVC will play at Santa Monica on Wednesday.
