New chief in California City

Walker takes leadership with police department

Jon Walker took the oath of office Tuesday as the new police chief of California City.

Walker takes control of the department following the retirement of Chief Eric Hurtado in October. Tuesday was his second day on the job, and he was already getting to know the officers.

“They’re a great bunch of guys and they’re really hard workers,” he said. “They’ve been through some difficult times and I”m hoping I can help with that.”

A Los Angeles native, Walker has nearly 30 years’ experience in law enforcement, starting with the Los Angeles Police Department in 1987.

“I not only witnessed history but I was a participant,” he said. “I saw everything from visiting presidents to popes to civil unrest to celebrations to big trials to Hollywood big wigs. I learned a lot in that time.”

The experiences helped him learn about people, and “the thing about people is they don’t change. They want to live in a safe place.”

“That want, whether you’re from a big city or a small city, is inherent. It’s in all of us,” he said.

Walker said his goal is to get the best technology and training for the officers and to grow the department.

“We’re going to do that with integrity and we’re going to be completely, completely transparent,” he said.
