AVC women win 2nd straight in conference

SANTA MONICA — The Antelope Valley College women’s basketball team defeated Santa Monica 80-57 in a Western State Conference game on the road on Wednesday.

The Marauders (7-10, 2-1 WSC) have won two straight after defeating West L.A. 76-45 on Saturday. The last two games have been the two highest scoring games of the season for AVC.

“The girls are playing very well at this point in the season,” AVC coach Barry Green said. “We hope we can just keep the momentum going throughout the rest of the conference.”

Niyah Page led the Marauders with 27 points and 11 rebounds, while Eriona Williams scored 19 points.

AVC comes home to host Bakersfield on Saturday.

Boys Soccer Highland 1, Knight 0

PALMDALE — The Highland boys soccer team came back from its three-week vacation and scored a 1-0 victory over Knight High at home on Wednesday.

The game was scoreless at halftime.

Andrew Cobb put the Bulldogs (3-2-1) on the board with a goal in the second half on an assist by Omar Sosa.

Highland goalkeepers Gerardo Xilonzochilt and Brian Sanchez combined for the shutout. Xilonzochilt made three saves in the first half, while Sanchez picked up two saves in the second half.

“I was real proud of my boys, they played hard,” Highland coach Lemuel Galvao said. “We just have to get better every game. We can’t take any games for granted.”

Galvao added “every win is huge” in the league as the top five teams are separated by just a few points.

“After tonight, I think there’s five teams that have a great run for the championship still,” Galvao said.

Knight fell to 3-2-2 in league and plays Palmdale, also 3-2-2, at home on

Friday.

Highland plays at Littlerock on Friday.

Quartz Hill 7, Palmdale 2

QUARTZ HILL — The Quartz Hill boys soccer team came back strong from the winter break with a 7-2, Golden League victory over Palmdale on Wednesday.

Kaylon Williams helped lead the way for the Rebels, scoring three goals and assisting on two others, while Victor Jimenez recorded two goals and two assists.

Fernando Valencia added a goal and an assist for Quartz Hill, while Joe Quintanilla also had a goal and Damien Montoya and Matthew Gamero picked up one assist apiece.

The Rebels (6-4, 5-2 GL) are alone atop the Golden League standings, while Palmdale (4-4-1, 3-2-2) is tied for third.

The Falcons play at Knight on Friday, while Quartz Hill plays at Lancaster.
