10-year-old shot in drive-by out­side school in Oxnard

OXNARD (AP) — A 10-year-old girl on a play­ground was shot by a stray bul­let in a drive-by shoot­ing out­side an el­e­men­tary school, au­thor­i­ties said Thurs­day.

Oxnard po­lice said on Twit­ter the girl was struck Thurs­day morn­ing dur­ing a car-to-car shoot­ing out­side McAuliffe El­e­men­tary School. The shoot­ing is be­lieved to be an iso­lated in­ci­dent.

The girl suf­fered non-life threat­en­ing in­juries, and no one else was in­jured, po­lice said.

“She is in good spir­its,” Oxnard Po­lice Chief Scott Whit­ney said.

The Ven­tura County Star re­ported that po­lice be­lieve a semi­au­to­matic hand­gun was used in the shoot­ing, which took place at the back of the school. Au­thor­i­ties re­cov­ered shell cas­ings in the street.
