LANCASTER — Have you ever wanted to see what goes on backstage at an air show? Maybe one featuring the thrilling performances of the Navy’s Blue Angels? Now’s your chance. The Los Angeles County Air Show “Aerospace Valley USA” is looking for volunteers to help make the March 21 and 22 air show a success.

The next information meeting is at 6 p.m. on Feb. 6, at the Learn 4 Life facility, 177 Holston Ave., in Lancaster.

Preparing for its sixth event, the air show is the product of a nonprofit organization and run largely by a small army of volunteers for everything from manning the gates to patrolling the event area for debris that could prove harmful to the aircraft.

“Our dedicated volunteers are the core foundation of our show. We would not be able to do it without them,” Volunteer Manager Betty Evans said.

The air show has about half the amount of volunteers they need and are looking to fill the remainder, she said.

The two-day air show will be held at Gen. William J. Fox Field in Lancaster and will feature the Navy’s Blue Angels precision demonstration team as the headline act.

From the Air Force, the

F-22 Raptor Demo Team will showcase that next-generation fighter’s capabilities.

Also scheduled to appear is “Tora! Tora! Tora!,” a recreation of the Dec. 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.

With pyrotechnic effects simulating explosions from the aerial bombardment, as well as a soundtrack filled with air raid sirens and the sounds of machine gun fire and the replica aircraft diving and swooping past, spectators get a taste of the sights, sounds and smells of the battle that day.

The event is rounded out by a variety of additional aerial acts, static ground displays, firsthand aerospace

history with the Heroes and Legends panels and an extensive, interactive STEM Exposition, offering handson experiences with a science, technology, engineering and math focus.

The sixth Los Angeles County Air show in March will be one of two in the Valley next year, in a new partnership between the nonprofit organization and

Edwards Air Force Base.

The second 2020 air show will be on Oct. 10 and 11 at Edwards AFB — the first time the storied base has hosted an air show since 2009.
