Deadline is today for Job Academy signups
PALMDALE — Today is the last day to register for the next session of the Palmdale Works! Youth Job Academy.
The free program is offered by the City to those ages 15 through 18 and is intended to give them a head start in preparing for a competitive job market.
While the Academy is free, registration is required. Go to www.cityofpalmdale.org/youth for an online application.
The classes will be from 4 to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting Feb. 4 and ending Feb. 20, at the Larry Chimbole Cultural
Center, 38550 Sierra Highway.
The academy was created in 2008 to help students seeking employment by teaching them how to apply and interview for jobs, as well as developing strong work skills to retain the job once they have it.
Participants will learn how to identify potential employers, dress and prepare for a job interview and will meet with employers from local businesses to learn about their priorities and practice their skills in mock interviews.
They will learn customer service skills and personal performance standards.
Graduates of the Academy receive a certificate of completion outlining the training components to show prospective employers.
Students must attend each session of the threeweek program in order to graduate.
”Young people are entering a very competitive market and taking this extra step to prepare themselves should speak volumes about their motivation,” Palmdale Executive Assistant Terrie Zayas, the class facilitator, said.
Future sessions of the Academy are planned in July and October.
