AVC men’s golf finishes fifth in opener

-

VALENCIA — The Antelope Valley College men’s golf team finished fifth out of eight teams in the Western State Conference opener at Valencia Country Club on Monday.

College of the Canyons was first with a 389, followed by Ventura (408), Santa Barbara (410) and Glendale (425), which was just four shots ahead of the Marauders (429).

“Although we didn’t get the team results we were hoping for I’m proud of the way the guys battled today,” AVC coach Brad Hazard said. “We have a talented group that has the ability to compete for a top spot in league and I’m looking forward to a great season.”

Jacob Valente led the Marauders with a 75, which was tied for third out of the field of 48 players. The top score was a 73 and the course average was an 85 in the cold and windy conditions.

“I’m excited for him,” Hazard said of Valente. “He’s been putting in a lot of time on the course preparing for the start of his freshman season and to see him post that score on a day like today shows just how talented of a golfer he is.”

Derrick Rossmango followed with an 85 and Miguel Cullum and Patrick Studdert each shot 87.

AVC will compete in another conference match at Oakmont Country Club next Monday.
