Palmdale Blue Stockings set for second season
PALMDALE — The Palmdale Blue Stockings Vintage Base Ball Club will return for their second season in the SoCal Vintage Base Ball League on March 14.
Last year, in the league’s inaugural season, five teams competed for the first SCVBB crown. The Riverside Smudge Pots (35) eventually prevailed in an upset victory over the undefeated Crestline Highlanders (8-0) in October.
The Blues finished with a 3-5 record in the SCVBB, which plays baseball in the fashion of the year 1886. Wearing old style uniforms and playing with recreations of 19th century balls, gloves and bats, the teams of the SCVBB show modern fans the history of our national pastime.
Much has changed in the offseason, with the league doubling in size and a restructuring of the league into a non-profit organization.
With 10 teams, SCVBB will break into two divisions. The teams comprising the Eastern Division will be the Crestline Highlanders, Riverside Smudge Pots and new teams Lake Arrowhead Loggers, Perris Prospectors and Temecula Deer Bros.
The West will have the Palmdale Blue Stockings, Long Beach Oilers, Redondo Beach Wharf Rats and new teams Lordsburg Trolleymen (La Verne) and Fullerton Fire Knockers.
Each team will play eight regular season games within their division, leading to the playoffs in October and a separate single-elimination tournament to determine which team will represent Southern California against a team from the Bay Area Vintage Base Ball League in San Francisco.
Palmdale Blue Stockings team captain, “Skip” Leland is confident that this season will show improvement from the Blues.
“We’ve made a few moves in the offseason,” Leland said. “We have been working on waking up our bats and added some new faces. I’ve gotten to look at the new teams, and they will be good, so we do need to step up our game this year.”
