Downtown has plenty of sights and sounds
This week, we’re checking out photographs from Vanity Fair on Hollywood glitz and glamour, viewing movie costumes up-close and browsing art in DTLA, learning about rare books in Pasadena, listening to the next generation of musical talent at the Walt Disney Concert Hall and admiring art from a Chinese master at LACMA.
Vanity Fair
Opening Feb. 8 at the Annenberg Space for Photography, 2000 Avenue of the Stars in Century City, is “Vanity Fair: Hollywood Calling.”
With 130 photographs and more than 50 photographers, “Hollywood Calling” will showcase Vanity Fair’s vaunted portraitists, including the magazine’s principal photographer, Annie Leibovitz, as well as other notables such as Helmut Newton and Herb Ritts.
The show will also display every Vanity Fair Hollywood Issue cover and portfolio, as well as photos from the annual Vanity Fair party on Oscar night.
The exhibition will also include a documentary on the making of the 2020 Hollywood Issue, which takes you behind-the-scenes to see how stars get picked for the cover.
“The exhibition is a look at the Hollywood stars, the parties and the powerbrokers through the distinctive lens of
Vanity Fair — the most widely celebrated journalistic arbiter of Hollywood power and personality,” the Annenberg website says.
The Annenberg is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day except Monday and Tuesday. Admission is free.
If the weather is nice, pack a picnic. There is a lawn area outside of the Annenberg that hardly sees any people on weekends.
The exhibition runs until July 26.
Movie costumes
Now on display at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM), 919 S. Grand Ave., is the annual Art of Motion Picture Costume Design exhibition.
Each year this exhibition allows you to get an up-close look at the costumes worn by your favorite stars. The exhibition features over 100 costumes from 30 films from 2019, including all five Academy Award nominees for Best Costume Design:
• “The Irishman” by Costume Designers Sandy Powell and Christopher Peterson
• “Jojo Rabbit” by Costume Designer Mayes C. Rubeo
