Caucuses, impeachment, SOTU, Oscars, oh my!

Here’s a couple dozen random thoughts about the news of the day

It occurs to me that: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi — now known as Nancy the Ripper — may be doing more to re-elect President Donald Trump than anyone in the country.

Kudos to Art Thompson for his work on the beautiful new memorial statue for fallen Los Angeles County Sheriff ’s Deputy Steve Owen.

What a great life — all 103 years of it — Kirk Douglas lived.

Feb. 3, 1959, was “The Day the Music Died,” and Feb. 3, 2020, was the day the Iowa Caucuses died.

The people writing in the Washington Post comments section wishing for a long, slow, painful death for Rush Limbaugh are to be pitied — it must be difficult living with a heart so filled with hate.

With her ill-considered impeachment — which she wisely resisted for months — Pelosi drove Trump’s approval rating to 49% in the Gallup Poll; her petulance at the State of the Union will drive him over 50.

Trump should take a lesson from Bill Clinton in how to handle an impeachment acquittal — Clinton was magnanimous and encouraged both parties coming together and getting back to work.

Like all State of the Union addresses, Trump’s was long on costly proposals and short (as in none) on mentions of the growing national debt.

In the livestream from her apartment during the State of the Union, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez had her little dog with her, and I swear to God the dog’s yaps made more sense than her incoherent ramblings.

The idea that Iowa and New Hampshire needed to go first in the presidential selection process has long outlived its expiration date.

Nancy Pelosi says she is not a hater — she just plays one on TV.

According to a lawsuit in Orange County, the Catholic Church is still — still, after all that has happened — covering up for abusive priests and allowing them to be near kids.

The coronavirus is already starting to drift off the media radar screen.

I disagree with House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy on the notion of expunging the president’s impeachment should the Republicans win back the House in the fall.

You know the Democrats have drifted way too far to the Trump-hating left when CNN’s Van Jones and MSNBC’s Chris Matthews are the voices of reason.

I can’t wait to once again not watch the Oscars this weekend.

As annoying as news websites and social media can be, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s proposal for government licensing is worse.

Let’s hope Iowa’s cell phone app voting isn’t a harbinger of California’s success with its fancy new computer voting system.

It would be nice if the suspect in the murder of Deputy Steve Owen could finally come to trial.

It was the late Mike Deaver (brother of Antelope Valley Press columnist Bill Deaver) who started the tradition of having special guests in the gallery at the State of the Union when he worked for President Ronald Reagan.
