Boys Basketball Lancaster 63, Eastside 61

LANCASTER — The Lancaster boys basketball team held off Eastside for a 63-61 Golden League victory on Thursday night.

With the win, the Eagles (14-7, 10-4 GL) took sole possession of second place. Quartz Hill won the league title with an 11-3 record, while Eastside and Highland tied for third (9-5), Knight was fifth (86), Palmdale finished sixth (7-7) and Antelope Valley and Littlerock tied for seventh (1-13).

Eastside had a lead entering the fourth quarter, but a couple of turnovers helped Lancaster start to pull ahead. The Eagles outscored the Lions 26-15 in the fourth quarter. But Eastside still had a chance at the end, throwing a long pass, but losing the ball. Both teams scrambled for the ball as time expired.

“It was a great game,” Lancaster coach Sid Melvin said, adding he was glad his team could win on senior night, as all 12 of his players are seniors.

Avion Robinson led the Eagles with 18 points.

“He really stepped up,” Melvin said. “That’s his season-high this year. He hit some big 3s in the fourth quarter that really helped us.”

Malcolm Hodges contributed 17 points as well as strong rebounding, while Jordan Roach scored 14, including some key free throws down the stretch.

“It was a total team effort,” Melvin said.

The CIF-Southern Section playoff brackets will be released on Sunday.
