CALIFORNIA CITY — A series of water line breaks in California City overnight Monday and throughout the day Tuesday disrupted water service to parts of the city and led to the closure of all schools in the Mojave Unified School District on Wednesday.

The water line breaks began overnight Monday, requiring the city’s Water Department to shut off water service to some areas while repairs were being made.

These areas included Melville Drive between Harvard Avenue and Bay Avenue, Kenniston Street between Walpole Avenue and California City Boulevard, Xavier Avenue between 91st Street and 94th Street, Heather Avenue between Isabella Boulevard and Poppy Boulevard and California

As of 8 a.m. Wednesday, water service had been restored to all areas of the city, according to the Police Department.

During the day Tuesday, the water shutoffs affected some Cal City schools, which are part of the Mojave Unified School District. District officials requested parents who could to pick up their students to do so early Tuesday afternoon.

Tuesday evening, District officials informed the public that all schools in the District, which includes two campuses in Mojave as well, would be closed on Wednesday as a result of the water service problems.

“Our district highly prioritizes the health and safety of our students and staff, which was the basis of this decision,” officials wrote in a notice posted to the District website and social media accounts.

All schools in the District were scheduled to reopen today, officials said late Wednesday afternoon.

During Tuesday’s regular City Council meeting, Mayor Chuck McGuire praised the efforts of the Water Department in responding to the crisis.

“Our water department today absolutely shined,” he said.
