Antelopes halt Ravens’ eight-game win streak

CALIFORNIA CITY — The Antelope Valley boys basketball team defeated California City 86-56 on Wednesday, snapping the Ravens’ eight-game winning streak.

Kiwan Sims Jr. led the Antelopes (6-13) with a game-high 32 points.

Antelope Valley led 36-22 at halftime, but created more separation by outscoring Cal City 27-12 in the third quarter.

The Ravens (8-5) started the season with an 0-4 record, but won eight straight, including a forfeit win, until Wednesday’s loss.

Both teams are competing in the Lions’ New Year’s Showcase at Eastside High this Friday and Saturday.

The Antelopes play North (Bakersfiel­d) at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, while the Ravens take on Lancaster at 3 p.m. on Friday.

Cal City lost to Lancaster in AV’s tournament 56-45 on Nov. 14.

Girls Basketball Paraclete 55, Pomona Catholic 24

POMONA — The Paraclete girls basketball team started the new year with a 55-24 victory over Pomona Catholic in a Santa Fe League game on Wednesday at Pomona Catholic.

Paraclete senior Leyla Morgan and freshman Dior Henson held Pomona Catholic’s leading scorer to single digits with two late field goals and four free throws in the first half.

Junior Ava Zubia led the Spirits (4-8, 2-2 SFL) offensivel­y with a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds, while sophomore Kaylen Sandberg also recorded a double-double with 12 points and 18 rebounds.

Paraclete freshman Phaedra Chatman also scored 12 points, while senior Marina Arredondo added 10 points in limited minutes.

The Spirits take on first-place Ramona Convent at home on Friday.
