Paraclete hits 2 free throws in last second to win

SANTA MONICA — The Paraclete boys basketball team led after the first three quarters against St. Monica Prep in a Camino Real League game on Friday night, but the Spirits found themselves down by six points with 3 minutes left in the game.

Paraclete fought back and Mister Burnside knocked down two free throws with 0.7 seconds remaining to give the Spirits a 55-53 road victory.

“Very proud of the way they fought through adversity, stayed together and made a little comeback,” Paraclete coach Newton Chelette said of his team. “You get a win like that on the road, it’s huge.”

Burnside led the Spirits (15-3, 2-0 CRL) with 20 points, DJ Phillips followed with 13 points, Brett Novack scored eight, Moses Wright and Devon Marshall added six points apiece and Ryan Brown contribute­d two points.

Paraclete plays host to Salesian on Wednesday.

Girls Basketball Corona del Mar 31, Knight 27

PALMDALE — The Knight girls basketball team lost to Corona del Mar 31-27 on Friday in a non-league game.

The Hawks trailed by three, 17-4, at halftime, but were outscored 8-2 in the third quarter.

“We didn’t avoid that one terrible quarter we have once a game and that cost us,” Knight coach Ryan Tarnoff said,

Amia Tate led the Hawks with 12 points, Asha Fudge scored nine and Alia Tate finished with six points.

Knight hosts Trinity Classical Academy in another non-league game on Wednesday.

Ramona Convent 54, Paraclete 26

LANCASTER — The Paraclete girls basketball team lost to first-place Ramona Convent 54-26 in a Santa Fe League game on Friday at Paraclete High.

The Spirits were led in scoring by their post players. Senior Marina Arredondo led the team with 10 points and added six rebounds, junior Ava Zubia scored six points with five rebounds and sophomore Kaylen Sandberg picked up four points, 10 rebounds and three blocks.

Paraclete plays at St. Genevieve on Tuesday.
