Knight girls basketball gets win over Palmdale

PALMDALE — The Knight girls basketball team defeated Palmdale 60-18 in a Golden League game on Thursday at Knight High.

The Hawks (7-12, 6-4 GL) didn’t start their normal starting five and worked on different offenses during the game. They led 33-13 at halftime.

“Everybody pretty much played even minutes,” Knight coach Ryan Tarnoff said. “The girls played well.”

Amia Tate led the Hawks with 20 points, while Asha Fudge scored nine points, Zaria Anderson put in seven points, and Kailah Holley and Kayla Roman added six points apiece.

Knight’s Alia Tate scored four points, Isabel Aguilar contribute­d three points and Morgan Shelton and Faye Iraheta added two points apiece.

Kimberly Campos led the Falcons (210, 1-9) with six points, while Molly Diaz put in five points, Beatrice Harmon scored four and Cahmora Calloway added three points.

Palmdale plays Littlerock at home on Tuesday. The Falcons’ lone league victory was a 36-23 win over the Lobos on Dec. 7.

Knight plays Lancaster on Tuesday. The two teams are tied for fourth in the league. The Hawks defeated the Eagles 5736 on Dec. 7.

“We feel like we can’t lose another game if we want to be in the playoffs,” Tarnoff said. “It doesn’t matter who’s next, they should get our best shot.”

Lancaster 58, Quartz Hill 45

LANCASTER — The Lancaster girls basketball team rebounded from Tuesday’s loss to Eastside with a 58-45 Golden League victory over Quartz Hill on Thursday at Lancaster High.

“It was a good win, coming back from Tuesday’s loss to Eastside,” Lancaster coach Eric Price said. “It seemed like our girls were more focused tonight.”

The Eagles (14-6, 6-4 GL) started slow, but were able to get through the Royals’ defense as the game wore on.

“Quartz Hill came out with an impressive press,” Price said. “Once we got used to it, we broke it a few times and got back into a rhythm.”

Freshman Hayden Tolbert led Lancaster with a game-high 22 points, while junior Brianna SaMarion added 17 and senior Jazzmyne Davis scored nine.

Mandy Frozina led the Royals (12-10, 4-6) with 15 points and Ashantee Palmer followed with 14 points.

Lancaster plays host to Knight on Tuesday, while Quartz Hill plays a non-league game at The Palmdale Aerospace Academy on Saturday and returns to league play against Eastside at home on Tuesday.

SPXSMA 71, Paraclete 25

LANCASTER — The Paraclete girls basketball team lost to the No. 2 team in the

Santa Fe League, St. Pius X-St. Matthias Academy, 71-25, on Thursday at Paraclete High.

Freshman Phaedra Chatman led the Spirits (8-10, 5-4 SFL) with 14 points and added two rebounds and one assist.

Paraclete junior Ava Zubia scored four points with seven rebounds and senior Marina Arredondo picked up two points, seven rebounds and three blocks.

The Spirits, who are currently fourth in the league standings, play at third-place Sacred Heart of Jesus on Tuesday at at firstplace Ramona Convent next Thursday.
