Knight tops unbeaten Canyon for first victory

CANYON COUNTRY — The Knight baseball team won its first game of the season 7-3 in eight innings at Canyon High on Saturday.

Knight (1-4) scored four runs in the top of the eight inning and outhit Canyon 7-2.

Knight sophomore Nathan Esparza was 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored, a double and an RBI and senior Just Zavala finished 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

Knight junior Louie Nieto scored two runs and had one hit and junior Jordan Estrella drove in a run and had one hit.

Knight senior starting pitcher Isaah Lopez threw 4.1 scoreless innings and did not allow a hit.

Canyon tied the game 3-3 with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

“The boys played very well today,” Knight co-coach Ryan Tarnoff said. “We cut down our strikeouts and put the ball in play. On the mound we pounded the zone and trusted the defense to make plays, which they did. We are very proud fo the boys today. They have had a ton of adversity early in this season, with their previous head coach stepping down last Saturday.”

Tarnoff is the co-head coach with George Esquer.

Quartz Hill 8, Chatsworth 3

CHATSWORTH — The Quartz Hill baseball team defeated Chatsworth 8-3 in a Easton Tournament game on Saturday.

The Royals improved to 3-1 on the season.

Quartz Hill led 7-0 in the top of the fourth inning.

Quartz Hill senior Jeffrey Kavanagh finished 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored, senior Esteban Sepulveda was 3-for-5 with two runs, senior Owen Rice finished 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI and senior Troy Johnson drove in two runs.

The Royals outhit Chatsworth 11-4 and did not commit an error, while the Chancellor­s made three errors.

Quartz Hill senior starting pitcher Ismael Quintero struck out six in five innings, giving up one hit and one run.

Quartz Hill plays at Royal on Thursday.
