Sencion strikes out 21 in Paraclete victory

LANCASTER — Paraclete pitcher Jamie Sencion struck out 21 batters and the Spirits defeated Serrano 6-0 on Thursday at Sgt. Steve Owen Memorial Park.

“She struck out everybody,” Paraclete coach Margaret Neill said. “She threw a good game. I was happy with her. She was happy.”

Sencion also went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double.

Sydney Scripter finished 4-for-4 with two RBIs for the Spirits (5-0), while Addison Gorman went 3-for-4 with an RBI.

“It was a big game for us, because they had a good pitcher and we’re going to see good pitching when we play at Garces this weekend,” Neill said. “So it got us ready for them.”

Paraclete plays a doublehead­er at Garces Memorial on Saturday.

Boys Volleyball Vasquez 3, Antelope Valley 0

LANCASTER — The Vasquez boys volleyball team defeated Antelope Valley 25-13, 25-7, 25-20 in a nonleague match on Thursday at AV High.

It was the first game of the season for the Mustangs, while the Antelopes dropped to 1-2 on the young season.

“Vasquez played well,” AV coach Edward Campbell said. “They jumped on us when we had a few off moments. Then we woke up in set three.”

The Antelopes play host to Desert in another non-league match on Tuesday.

Vasquez plays host to Rosamond on Tuesday.

Desert Christian 3, Bakersfiel­d Christian 0

LANCASTER — The Desert Christian boys volleyball team won a preseason match in straight sets, 25-21, 25-21, 25-21 against Bakersfiel­d Christian on Thursday at Desert Christian High School.

Desert Christian junior outside hitter led the Knights with 20 kills, 20 digs and three aces, senior outside hitter Zachary Bell finished with eight kills and four blocks, sophomore libero Isaac Muralles added eight digs and fives aces, senior middle hitter Austen Collin had four kills and one block, junior middle hitter CJ Chewning finished with two blocks and a kill and senior setter Josiah Concepcion had 32 assists.

Desert Christian will play in its Heritage League opener on Tuesday at The Palmdale Aerospace Academy at 4 p.m.

Women’s Tennis Ventura 7, AVC 2

VENTURA — The Antelope Valley College women’s tennis team lost a Western State Conference match at Ventura 7-2 on Thursday.

AVC No. 1 singles player Sydney Bush won her set 6-4, 1-6, 11-9, on a tiebreak, after trailing 1-7 in the tiebreak, surviving two match points.

Bush and her partner in No. 1 doubles Nicole Padilla lost 8-1.

“Very pleased with Sydney’s win,” AVC coach Justin Webb said. “She demonstrat­ed everything we are about as a program, as she absolutely never gave up and continued to fight one point at a time.”

AVC’s No. 2 doubles team of Jocelyn Ortega and Amber Hufford lost 8-0 and the No. 3 team of Arianett Avina and Emily Lopez won 8-5.

“Ari and Emily have been right on the verge of a breakthrou­gh and today they got there,” Webb said. “Overall we will continue to keep working hard in an effort to improve our overall performanc­e.”

Padilla lost her singles set 6-4, 6-3, Ortega lost 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, Avina lost at No. 4 singles 6-2, 6-2, Lopez lost at No. 5 singles 6-1, 6-4 and Hufford lost at No. 6 singles 6-0, 6-0.

The Marauders are 2-6 overall and 0-4 in conference and host a non-conference match against Orange Coast College today at 2 p.m.
