Desert Christian opens league with 3-0 win

The Desert Christian boys volleyball team opened Heritage League play with a 25-23, 25-12, 25-20 victory over The Palmdale Aerospace Academy on Tuesday.

Desert Christian junior outside hitter Colt Schmidt posted 17 kills, 10 digs and five aces, while senior outside hitter Zachary Bell picked up five kills and had 14 serves and senior Josiah Concepcion recorded 29 assists.

Junior opposite Izzy Barragan posted four kills for the Knights (2-0, 1-0 Heritage), while junior CJ Chewning added one kill, one block and three digs, sophomore defensive specialist Justin Green had one ace in 14 serves, Austen Collin contribute­d one kill and one block, senior Jimmy Siracusa had nine serves and Isaac Muralles recorded three digs and one ace on 12 serves.

Desert Christian plays at Paraclete in a non-league game on Thursday.

Softball Bishop Amat 4, Paraclete 2

The Paraclete softball team suffered its first loss of the season to Bishop Amat, 4-2, in the Camino Real League opener on Tuesday.

The Spirits (7-1, 0-1) allowed just one big inning of three runs, which put the Lancers ahead for good.

Paraclete’s Jamie Sencion suffered the loss, allowing three runs on three hits and four walks with five strikeouts in 2.2 innings.

Sydney Scripter followed and allowed one run on four hits with four strikeouts in 3.1 innings.

“It was a good called game,” Paraclete coach Margaret Neill said. “They put pressure on us and we didn’t handle it well.”

Scripter hit a two-run home run, which scored Sencion, who was also had two hits. Addie Vandecar also recorded two hits for the Spirits.

Paraclete takes on St. Anthony on Thursday at Marie Kerr Park.

Women’s College Tennis Santa Barbara 6, AVC 3

SANTA BARBARA — The Antelope Valley College women’s tennis team lost to Santa Barbara City College 6-3 on Tuesday in a Western State Conference match.

In doubles play, No. 1 Sydney Bush and Nicole Padilla lost 8-1, No. 2 Kaelin Vasquez and Genesis Vasquez lost 8-5 and No. 3 Arianett Avina and Emily Lopez won by default.

In singles play, No. 1 Bush lost 6-0, 6-0 and No. 2 Padilla lost 6-2, 6-0.

No. 3 Kaelin Vasquez dropped her first set 6-0, but fought back from a 3-0 deficit in the second set to win six of nine games and force a tiebreak. She ultimately lost the second set 7-6 (5).

No. 4 Avina played a third set tiebreaker, but lost 3-6, 6-3, 12-10. She fought back from a 5-0 deficit in the third-set tiebreaker.

No. 5 Lopez won in straight sets, 7-6 (4), 7-5, and No, 6 Genesis Vasquez won by default.

“We continue to show our ability to fight and face adversity,” AVC coach Justin Webb said. “As long as we continue to do that, we will eventually see results in our favor.”

The Marauders (2-8, 0-5 WSC) play a conference home match against Glendale College on Thursday.

Baseball

Cal City 10, Vasquez 10

The California City and Vasquez baseball teams tied 10-10 in a non-league game on Tuesday.

The Ravens were doomed by nine errors.

“We played well today, but gave up nine unearned runs with the defensive blunders,” Cal City coach Shane Moore said.

Jeremiah Baker pitched three innings for the Ravens, allowing six unearned runs on one hit. He was also 2-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, two runs and four RBIs.

Blake Moore pitched the seventh for Cal City, retiring all three batters he faced. He also went 1-for-1 with three walks, three runs and one RBI.

The Ravens host Desert Christian on Thursday.

Highland 6, Saugus 1 Highland 3, Patriot 0

The Highland baseball team won a pair of games over the weekend to improve to 3-1 to start the season.

On Friday, the Bulldogs beat Saugus 6-1.

Highland senior Jacob Badillo struck out six batters in four innings, giving up four hits and one unearned run to get the win. Senior Cesar Casas threw three shutout innings of relief, striking out three and giving up no hits to earn the save.

Highland had a well-balanced attack against Saugus at the plate.

Senior Carlos Toro was 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI, senior Caleb Montemayor was 1-for-3 with a run an an RBI, senior Christian Arreola was 2-for-4 with a run an an RBI, sophomore Cole Studt was 1-for3 with a run and an RBI, senior William Metz was 1-for-4 with an RBI, freshman Nick Gonzalez was 1-for-3 and Casas was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

On Saturday Highland shutout Patriot 3-0.

Highland senior pitcher Will Paxton struck out eight batters in 6.2 shutout innings, giving up the only hit with two outs in the sixth inning.

Casas earned another save by retiring one batter, striking out one and did not allow a hit.

Paxton finished 3-for-4 with a run and two doubles, Badillo was 3-for-3 with an RBI, Casas finished 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI, Toro was 1-for-4, Montemayor was 1-for-4 with an RBI and a double and Gonzalez was 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Swimming Boys: QH 115, Burroughs 53 Girls: QH 143, Burroughs 11

PALMDALE — The Quartz Hill swim team dominated a non league meet against Burroughs on Tuesday at Marie Kerr Pool.

The Quartz Hill girls won 143-11, winning every single event and now have a 1-01 record.

The Quartz Hill boys won 115-53, winning eight of the 11 events, and improved to 2-0 to start the season.

None of the times counted towards CIF qualifying times, since the Royals don’t have a touchpad system in place yet.

Quartz Hill’s Golden League opener against Littlerock that was scheduled for today has been reschedule­d to March 19.

The Royals will open league on March 7 against Palmdale at Marie Kerr Pool at 3:30 p.m.
