DC wins 16 events at Heritage League meet

PALMDALE — The Desert Christian track and field team won 16 events in the first Heritage League meet of the season on Tuesday at Palmdale Academy Charter School.

The Palmdale Aerospace Academy won 10 events and Vasquez won two events.

Corryn Smith broke the Knights’ school record in the discus with a winning throw of 125 feet and eight inches. Smith was tied for the record with Samaria McDonald’s 2018 throw of 124-10 before Tuesday’s big throw.

Ella Dluzak won three individual events for Desert Christian, taking home the top prize in the 1,600 meters with a time of 6 minutes, 26.26 seconds, the 800 meters (3:04.40) and the high jump (3-10).

Mehari Windheim won both the 1,600-meter boys race (5:03.31) and the 3,200 meters (10:33.61), while Abigail Billingsle­y won the girls 400 meters (1:12.76) and 300-meter hurdles (1:00.32) and Isabella Hogle won the girls 200-meter dash (30.61) and the long jump (13-08).

Desert Christian’s Asher Saltzman took the win in the boys 110 hurdles (20.88), Grace Acevedo won the girls 100-meter dash (13.06), Ethan Wupperfeld won the boys 300-meter hurdles (51.01) and Chase Metter won the boys high jump (5-00).

The Desert Christian girls also won the 4x100 relay (56.46) and the 4x400 relay (4:54.86).

Ryan Barillas and Alex Olivas both won two individual events apiece for The Palmdale Aerospace Academy.

Barillas took home first in both the boys 400 meters (57.54) and 200 meters (25.44), while Olivas won both throwing events with a 33-00.5 throw in the shot put and a throw of 95-06.5 in the discus.

Isabella Rodriguez won the 100 hurdles (21.44) for the Griffins, while Ivan Esquivel won the boys 100-meter dash (12.18), Sophia Crespo won the girls shot put (3401.5) and Abraham Gonzalez had a leap of 19-09 to win the boys long jump.

The TPAA boys also won the 4x100 (47.72) and 4x400 (4:02.64) relays.

Vasquez’s Rylee Larson won the girls 3,200 meters (15:59.65) and Blake Mascon won the boys triple jump (35-09).

On Saturday, Desert Christian is co-hosting the Desert Christian/Eastside Invitation­al at Knight High School. The meet, which starts at 8:30 a.m., will consist of 685 athletes from 20 different schools.

Baseball Quartz Hill 3, Palmdale 2

PALMDALE — The Quartz Hill baseball team held off a late charge by Palmdale for a 3-2, Golden League victory on Wednesday at Palmdale High.

The Royals (7-1, 2-0 GL) led 3-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh. The Falcons (0-9, 0-3) scored two unearned runs off Quartz Hill reliever Beau Parisi before Ismael Quintero closed out the game after allowing a walk and striking out one.

Jeffrey Kavanagh had a hit and an RBI for the Royals, while Johnny Mares also drove in a run.

Esteban Sepulveda was 2-for-4 with a run for Quartz Hill, while Jason Uribe and Xavier Moreno each had a hit and a run scored.

Christophe­r Lozano picked up the win for the Royals, allowing just two hits and one walk with four strikeouts in five shutout innings.

Palmdale’s Julian Preciado, Danny Villa, Benjamin Cisneros and Frank Rubio all had hits, while Cisneros and Ivan Cisneros scored the runs.

Roscoe Molina allowed three runs, one earned, on seven hits and one walk for the Falcons.

California City 27, Mojave 2 (5)

MOJAVE — The California City baseball team defeated Mojave 27-2 in five innings at Mojave High School.

Kevin Hightower went 3-for-5 with three RBIs for the Ravens (4-4-1), while Jeremiah Baker was 2-for-2 with a home run and two RBIs, Jack Moore was 1-for-2 with a double and two RBIs.

California City’s Joshua Baiza finished 3-for-5 with four RBIs, Dylan Hammer went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Henry Ramsey broke out of a slump, going 2-for3 with a double, an inside-the-park homer and three RBIs.

“He hit the ball really well today,” Cal City coach Shane Moore said about Ramsey. “I was pleased with how we hit the ball up and down the lineup today. We’ve struggled at the bottom of the order and we’ve struggled putting together big innings and today we were able to do that.”

Thirteen of the Ravens’ 14 players picked up hits and 12 had RBIs.

“That was the most encouragin­g thing, today, that everybody came out and put the ball in play,” Shane Moore said.

Cal City had five pitchers pitch one inning apiece. Jack Moore started and threw nine pitches for a 1-2-3 inning.

Dakoda Kusmit, Isaac Baladez and HIghtower pitched the middle innings. Landon Rogers threw his first inning in his high school career to close out the game, allowing two runs to the Mustangs (0-6).

Cal City competes in the McFarland Tournament this weekend, starting with Strathmore on Friday.

Mojave plays at Mendota in a nonleague game on April 3.

Softball California City 14, Mojave 1 (5)

MOJAVE — The California City softball team defeated Mojave 14-1 in five innings of a non-league game on Wednesday in Mojave.

Natasha Aguirre hit a home run, drove in three runs and scored two for the Ravens (5-1), while Makayla Haggins finished 2-for3 with a run and two RBIs, Aubrey Hamilton went 2-for-2 with two doubles, three runs and an RBI and Nevaeh Ramirez was 3-for-5 with two runs and two stolen bases. Lana Israel also contribute­d a hit, a run and an RBI, while Lorina Rodarte had a hit, an RBI and two runs scored.

Cal City plays Arvin in the Mira Monte Tournament today, while the Mustangs (13) play at Immanuel Christian to open HiLo League play on Friday.
