-

LANCASTER — The Paraclete softball team edged St. Paul, 6-5, on a go-ahead home run by Taylor Day in the sixth inning on Thursday at Paraclete High.

The Spirits (20-2, 6-2 Del Rey League) stayed tied for first with Bishop Amat in the Del Rey League standings.

Paraclete trailed St. Paul 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sydney Scripter erased the deficit with one swing, hitting a three-run home run to tie the game.

“At the beginning, we really were not making adjustments well at all,” Paraclete coach Margaret Neill said. “In bottom of the fifth they finally put it together and got enough runs.”

Scripter drove in the first five runs for the Spirits, getting her team on the board in the bottom of the third. Paraclete’s Carmen Sanchez and Addison Vandecar got on base and Scripter drove them in on a base hit.

Day broke the tie in the sixth inning, hitting her second game-winning homer of the season.

Sanchez and Vandecar each had two hits. Sanchez scored two runs and Vandecar scored one.

Paraclete pitcher Jamie Sencion didn’t have her best stuff, allowing five runs on five hits and four walks with six strikeouts. She struck out the final batter to end the game. Her defense helped her throughout the game.

“All of our outfielders played really, really well today,” Neill said. “They played great defense behind Jamie today.”

Day, Sanchez and Angelina Soliz were the outfielders for the Spirits.

Day robbed a home run and Sanchez caught a ball at the fence.

Paraclete plays at St. Paul on Tuesday.
