AV-based business gets monthly honor from Wilk

-

LANCASTER — State Sen. Scott Wilk has honored Antelope Valley-based RefiSnacks as Senate District 21’s Small Business of the Month.

He presented founder Refugio Rodriguez with a California Senate Certificate of Recognition at a ribbon-cutting celebration held at Lancaster’s BLVD Farmers Market.

“The fact that Refugio started his small business in the middle of an unprecedented pandemic, a time when small businesses across the state were forced to close their doors, speaks volumes to his ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit. It’s really remarkable,” said Wilk, R-Santa Clarita. “It’s my pleasure to recognize their accomplishments, and I look forward to seeing what’s next for this young small business.”

Rodriguez founded RefiSnacks in 2020. Since then, it has become a beloved destination in the Antelope Valley for their vegan chamoy candies.

Used all over Mexico, and by many street food vendors, chamoy is a sweet, tangy condiment used on fruits and candies as a dip, sauce, or topping.

Just before his junior year of high school, Rodriguez moved with his family to the Antelope Valley, and he graduated from Palmdale High School in 2016.

He started RefiSnacks in the middle of the pandemic, after having lost his two retail jobs. During that period he was a full-time college student, whose goal was to graduate and apply to law school.

The business quickly took off, with Rodriguez selling his candies at the Antelope Valley Fair and Alfalfa Festival, selling products at Lucky Luke’s and Don Sal Cocina & Cantina, and by hosting a booth at Lancaster’s weekly BLVD Farmers Market.

Rodriguez’s love and passion for his business is matched by his love for his community, making service a core part of RefiSnacks’ values.

They continuously collaborate with local nonprofits and fellow small businesses. In addition, he has partnered with City of Palmdale for a first-ever “Clean The Earth” event, worked with AV Salvation Army and the City of Lancaster at its holiday toy drives, and has hosted proms for underserved youth.

“Being recognized as Small Business of the Month is a testament to the dedication and perseverance I’ve poured into my venture. It’s a validation that my hard work is being noticed and appreciated,” Rodriguez said at the recognition ceremony. “Knowing that I inspire other small businesses fuels my passion even more, driving me to continue pushing boundaries and achieving greater heights. It’s a humbling honor that reinforces the significance of chasing dreams and never giving up.”
