The Magistrate (Mark Rylance) of a distant outpost bordering an unnamed empire welcomes Colonel Joll (Johnny Depp) – who, after arriving to inspect the border’s security, conducts ruthless interrogations that lead the Magistrate to reassess his imperial loyalty.

2. Coetzee originally borrowed that title from a poem written by the Greek poet C. P. Cavafy.
3. Joe Alwyn took the role of the Lieutenant before departing the project, leaving Sam Reid to play that part in the finished film.
4. Principal photography of this film occurred in Morocco and Italy during November and December 2018.
