SEARCY — Since January, White County 4-H countywide contests have been under way.

The annual bake-off competition was held in January at Harding University, featuring homemade cornbread, sugar cookie and biscuit recipes. Haley Workman from the Westside Clovers 4-H Club and Lori Barker from the Mount Pleasant 4-H Club were the winners in the cornbread division — junior and senior levels, respectively.

Sarah Brister and David Brister, both of the Home School 4H Club, turned in sugar cookie recipes, taking first place in each of their age divisions. The top winners in the biscuit category were Emma Williams of the Lion’s Pride 4-H Club in the junior age division and David Brister of the Home School 4-H Club in the senior age division.

With the month of February came the dairy recipe contest and the talks and demonstrations competition.

The dairy recipe contest is among the most attended contests by 4-H members in the county. Meredith Williams, Stephanie Williams, Emma Williams and Daniel Williams, all of the Lion’s Pride 4-H Club, won each of their respective categories at this competition.

The talks and demonstrations competition was held at Arkansas State University at Beebe with about two-dozen 4-H members in attendance. This contest gave members the opportunity to practice their public-speaking abilities.

In March, the annual talent and fashion revue competition was held at White County Central School Auditorium. The winner of the junior vocal category was Garrett Robinson of the Home School 4-H Club, and the winner of the senior vocal category was Meredith Williams of the Lion’s Pride 4-H Club. Garrett whistled a tune, and Meredith sang.

In the instrumental category, the junior-division winner was Ashley Workman of the Westside Clovers 4-H Club, and the senior-division winner was David Brister of the Home School 4-H Club. They each played the piano. Emma Ferren was the winner in the junior dance category, and she represented the Home School 4-H Club.

In the fashion revue competition, Meredith Williams received first place in the Senior Purchased – Dressy category, Stephanie Williams placed first in the Senior Purchased – Casual category, Emma Williams received a first-place ribbon in the Junior Purchased – Dressy category, and Daniel Williams came out on top in the Junior Purchased – Casual category.

The BBQ Broiler Contest was held March 31 at the White County Fairgrounds, and Agriday and the Ross Photography contest was held Saturday, also at the fairgrounds.

The University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service sponsors 4-H activities statewide. The Extension Service is part of the University of Arkansas’ Division of Agriculture.
