The Sporty Runner
Fitness fans can find head-to-toe gear
The Sporty Runner, originally known as The Sporty Lady, opened in Conway in 1999.
“I opened the store because as a female runner, it was difficult to find shoes and apparel,” owner Linda Starr said, “especially apparel for women.”
The full-service running store provides male and female runners, swimmers, triathletes, walkers and fitness enthusiasts with everything they need, including a wide range of shoes, clothing and accessories.
The Sporty Runner carries a broad selection of running and walking shoes, including Brooks, Mizuno, Saucony, Asics, Pearl Izumi, New Balance and the new popular shoes Vibram Five Fingers. The store also stocks cross-country and track spikes and racing flats.
“We believe in providing excellent customer service combined with top-notch products not found in other stores,” Starr said. “By providing free gait analysis, we can determine each customer’s running mechanics to recommend the appropriate shoe to fit their foot.”
The store is staffed by runners and is a sponsor for local races and triathlons, including the Arkansas RRCA Grand Prix racing series.
Linda and her son Don often speak at health-related seminars about proper apparel for running. She is the statewide clinic director of the Women Can Run/walk clinics, a program in its 15th year with clinics in 42 cities, while Don participates in several races and triathlons during the year, including the Little Rock Marathon.
“We believe in being actively involved in the running community,” Starr said.
Speedo, TYR and Dolfin swimwear is available year-round, along with triathlon gear from Desoto, 2XU and Pearl Izumi. The store now carries an expanded line of competition swimwear and accessories for every age group from youth to high school and masters swimmers.
Available accessories include watches, goggles, energy-replacement products and many other running- and triathlon related items.
