It’s show time

High Schoolers pump gas back into car show

The annual car show at Fourche River Days has been a staple at the event, but when two high school students found out the car show might not happen this year, they jumped at the chance to take over.

When Ty Hunt and Layne Woods, both 10th-graders at Perryville High School, heard there might not be a car show at the festival this year, they asked their EAST instructor, Vicki Harris, if it would be possible for them to make the show a class project.

Harris said the project fit in with EAST principals such as self-guided learning, critical thinking and problem solving, and community involvement.

Hunt and Woods, who both enjoy attending car shows, are organizing the event with classmate Scott Roland. From working with the Perryville Chamber of Commerce to ordering trophies for the winners, the two are gaining experience in event organizing and leadership, Harris said.

“I’m looking forward to seeing how well [they] do,” she said, “because I’m going to let them run the table and the whole nine yards.

The Fourche River Days Car Show will take place on the courthouse square on Saturday, with registration taking place from 9-11 a.m. and judging beginning at noon.

The registration fee for the car show is $25, and there are 11 categories: antique stock 1900-1949; antique stock 1950-1972, stock class 1972-present; truck; Camero; Corvette; Mopar; Mustang; rat rod; street rod; and youth.

Awards will be presented at 2 p.m. Saturday. Each category will have a first- and second-place winner, and a Best of Show trophy will be awarded.

Entry fees will go back into Fourche River Days, Harris said.

“We’re actually just volunteering our time to run [the car show] as an involvement in the community to help the money go back into the community,” she said.
