7 Quiz Bowl teams win titles at state conference

The Arkansas Governor’s Quiz Bowl Associatio­n has awarded each first-place team $3,200 in scholarshi­p funds and each second-place team $1,600.

Bowl champions were decided in the state conference finals April 28 at the Arkansas Educationa­l Television Network in Conway.

The results of the match in each high school classifica­tion and the names of the winning team members are:

1A — Haas Hall Academy from Fayettevil­le defeated Little Rock’s estem Public Charter High. The Haas Hall team members were Mycah Kettner, Lisa Terry, Eli Barton, Brian Grigg, James Underwood, Adam Mendonca, Isaac Foster and Brenden Thomas.

2A — Cedar Ridge High in Newark defeated Gurdon High. The Cedar Ridge team was made up of Chandler McCoy, Jeffrey Steward, Bryce Cash, Hunter Chinn-wood, Karen Hartsfield, Wesley Gwaltney, Tim Selvidge, Brian Combee and Ryan Paul.

3A — Center point High, based in Amity, defeated Episcopal Collegiate High from Little Rock. The Center point team consisted of Lily Franklin, Nancy Cheng, Levi Williams, Heidi West, Billy Buck, Sarah Mitchell, Clayton Sorrells, Kyle Harvey, Ethan Blackmon and Pake Sutton.

4A — Nashville High defeated Subiaco Academy. The Nashville team was made up of Hayden Kirchhoff, Jacob Caballero, Candace Brown, Alex Perrin, Jonathon Lance, Josh Witherspoo­n, Alex Kwok and Cameron Alexander.

5A — Watson Chapel High defeated Huntsville High. The Watson Chapel team members were Tanner Hoyt, Eric Williams, Jordyn Billingsle­y, Rhett Hunt, Elizabeth White, Ronette Metcalf, Tony Elkins, Bryan Rodgers, Bailey Garner, Andrew Fleming, Jimmy Beggs, Curtis Burnley, Chris Adams and Joshua Knight.

6A — Benton High defeated Parkview Arts Science Magnet High School in the Little Rock School District. The Benton team members were Ariel Sorg, John Stonesifer, Veekash Patel, Tucker Partridge and Eric Emmons.

7A — Arkansas School for Mathematic­s, Sciences and the Arts, a state residentia­l high school for juniors and seniors in Hot Springs, defeated Conway High. Members of the winning team were Ryan Mallaby, Erik Monson, Brady Rowe, Alex Shell and Goo Wang.

Quiz Bowl is a celebratio­n and recognitio­n of scholarshi­p that has been an AETN tradition since 1985. Players must display their knowledge in literature, math, science, history, art, music and economics.
