100 YEARS AGO May 9, 1912 A service for old people will be held on Sunday, May 12, at 11 a.m., at Immanuel Baptist church, Tenth and Bishop streets, at which only the “old time songs” will be sung, and no musical instruments will be used. Aged or infirm persons, who may be unable to attend without conveyance, can phone the pastor and someone will call for them. 50 YEARS AGO May 9, 1962 Only four states topped Arkansas in tourist travel during 1961, according to the American Automobile Association. It has just released the reports submitted to it by the various states. Virginia led the list with 36 million out-of-state visitors, followed by North Carolina with 24.4 million; Kentucky with 17.3 million and Nevada with 16.5 million. Arkansas had 16.4 million, according to the Arkansas Publicity and Parks Division. 25 YEARS AGO May 9, 1987 Despite two federal investigations of programs administered by the North Little Rock Community Development Agency, the Department of Housing and Urban Development has approved during the past two weeks an additional $148,000 for the city-operated department. John T. Suskie, HUD’S Little Rock manager, said Friday that the department could not “prejudge” and disallow additional funding for the agency because of investigations. 10 YEARS AGO May 9, 2002 State law prohibits Arkansas State University from covering its $1.8 million athletic department deficit by retroactively designating as an athletic fee part of the tuition paid by its students, Attorney General Mark Pryor said Wednesday. Lu Hardin, director of the state Department of Higher Education, encouraged ASU officials to comply with Pryor’s opinion, although it differed from his own legal conclusion. He called Pryor’s opinion, which is advisory and not binding, “somewhat of a stretch.” ASU President Les Wyatt said the university will follow the opinion and that the athletic department will have a revenue shortfall in fiscal 2002, which ends June 30.
