100 YEARS AGO May 13, 1912 “Mothers’ Day” was generally observed in Little Rock yesterday. Almost every other man on the street wore a carnation in honor of his mother. There was “Mothers’ Day” distribution of carnations also at several churches, and many people sent postcards to their mothers. “Mothers’ Day” has become very popular since it was first suggested about two years ago. 50 YEARS AGO May 13, 1962 FORT SMITH — Political candidates may speak on the University of Arkansas campus “under certain conditions” but the institution’s facilities may not be used to solicit political party membership or to support or oppose candidates, the board of trustees ruled yesterday. L.C. Carter of Stuttgart, chairman, said the board, at its annual offcampus meeting here, reaffirmed the policy, approved April 20, relative to the use of university facilities. 25 YEARS AGO May 13, 1987 Faced with lower-thanhoped-for state support, the University of Arkansas Board of Trustees Tuesday approved increases in room and board rates, graduation fees, and many other student fees. Kaneaster Hodges, chairman of the board, said the fee increases were normal and were required to offset the increasing costs of education. Hodges said he was still hopeful Gov. Clinton would call a special session of the state legislature to seek additional revenue for higher education. 10 YEARS AGO May 13, 2002 The Little Rock Board of Directors is bracing for more debate Tuesday when it reconsiders granting control of citywide trash collection to the Public Works Department. Last week the board voted 5-4 in favor of the plan, with City Director Genevieve Stewart abstaining and City Director Dean Kumpuris absent. The measure needed six votes to pass. Despite the dissent, city directors agree on one thing: With roughly four months until the city’s current contract with Waste Management of Arkansas ends, the clock is ticking to decide who will haul Little Rock’s trash.
