Young artists show work in Little Rock exhibition

Several young artists from the Three Rivers Edition coverage area have their work on display in the 51st annual Young Arkansas Artists Exhibition at the Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock.

The exhibition showcases artworks in all media created by students in kindergart­en through the 12th grade in Arkansas.

Teachers from 177 schools across the state submitted 667 artworks for considerat­ion. Members of the Arkansas Arts Educators selected 116 artworks for the exhibition. The exhibition will be on view through May 27.

Amanda Linn from the state Department of Education selected the awards for the exhibition. She selected one Best of Class and two Honorable Mention awards for each grade level. Monetary awards, funded by Arkansas Children’s Hospital, are given to support each winner’s arts program.

The following local students have works in the show: • Beebe High School: 11th-grader Olivia Bruce, with a charcoal, Artist’s Mother. • Cabot High School: 10th-grader Hunter Godsey, with an ink and watercolor, Wood Song. • Cabot Junior High North: Seventh-grader Sophia Becker, with a pen and ink piece, Curious Cub, which won an Honorable Mention award. • Cabot Junior High South: Seventh-grader Jennifer Wallace, with a watercolor, Lily and Pear; eighth-grader Lauren Calhoun, with a mixed media work, At the Cross; and ninth-grader Emily Richards, with a colored pen and ink drawing, Caladiums, which won an Honorable Mention award. • Cabot Middle School North: Fifth-grader Marissa Ruiz, with a mixed media work, Hippie Shoes, which won an Honorable Mention award. • Cherokee Elementary School, Hardy: Kindergart­ner Max Brakebill, with a tempera piece, Lilies. • Highland Middle School: Sixth-grader Richard Skinner, with a tempera work, Self-portrait, which won an Honorable Mention award; and seventhgra­der Kallie Scott, with a mixed media piece, The Two Story Stair, which won a Best of Class award. • Timbo Schools: First-grader J.D. Russell, with a paper collage, Fall Tree; second-grader Ray Morris, with a collage, After Eric, which won an Honorable Mention award; fourthgrad­er Justin Breedlove, with a collage, Tree Scenery; sixthgrade­r Mackenzie Anderson, with a crayon and scratchboa­rd work, Hummingbir­d, which won an Honorable Mention award; and eighth-grader Kylee Croney, with a crayon and scratchboa­rd piece, Green Cat.

• Walnut Ridge High School: Ninth-grader Bethany Paige Cox, with a graphite, Self-portrait.

The Arkansas Arts Center is at 501 E. Ninth St. in Little Rock.

There is no admission charge. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday; and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. The center is closed Mondays and major holidays.
