Young artists show work in Little Rock exhibition

The artwork of several young artists from the River Valley & Ozark Edition coverage area is on display in the 51st annual Young Arkansas Artists Exhibition at the Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock.

The exhibition showcases artworks in all media created by students in kindergart­en through the 12th grade in Arkansas. Teachers from 177 schools across the state submitted 667 artworks for considerat­ion. Members of the Arkansas Arts Educators selected 116 artworks for the exhibition. The exhibition will continue through May 27.

Amanda Linn from the state Department of Education selected the awards for the exhibition. She selected one Best of Class and two Honorable Mention awards for each grade level. Monetary awards, funded by Arkansas Children’s Hospital, are given to support each winner’s arts program.

The following local students have works in the show:

• Florence Mattison Elementary School, Conway: Kindergart­ner Roxie Mahan, with a mixed media piece, Feeding My Rainbow Fish; and first-grader Morgan Robertson, with a watercolor, Hoot Hoot, which won a Best of Class award.

• Jim Stone Elementary School, Conway: First-grader Abigail Drennan, with a mixed media piece, Music Masterpiec­e; and secondgrad­er Sugey Sifuentes, with a tempera and marker work, Mr. Louis Armstrong.

• Pottsville High School: 10th-grader Sara Madison Johnson, with a colored pencil and watercolor piece, Curiosity Cures the Cat.

• Pottsville Junior High School: Eighth-grader Shane Andrews, with a charcoal, Fire Hose, which won an Honorable Mention award; and ninth-grader Erica Lackey, with a charcoal, Owl.

• Theodore Jones Elementary School, Conway: Kindergart­ner Padraigh Easley, with a mixed media work, Watch Me Run and Jump; and firstgrade­r Anastasia Sexson, with a tempera and watercolor, The Rooster Walks in the Grass, which won an Honorable Mention award.

• Vilonia High School: 10th-grader Sarah Little, with a graphite, Me and My Room, which won a Best of Class award.

• Vilonia Junior High School: Ninth-grader Elizabeth Poindexter, with a tempera work, Boy Under Light.

The Arkansas Arts Center is at 501 E. Ninth St. in Little Rock. There is no admission charge. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday; and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. The center is closed Mondays and major holidays.
