Woman fakes court records

She’s sentenced for try at thwarting background check

- JOHN LYNCH

A 32-year-old Cabot woman was sentenced Thursday to jail time and probation for counterfeiting court records to get around a criminal background check.

Christy Gale Milam pleaded guilty to second-degree forgery Thursday before Pulaski County Circuit Judge Herb Wright in exchange for five years on probation, two months in jail, a $1,500 fine and 100 hours of community service.

Milam, a convicted felon, was “desperate for a job” at Levy Baptist Church in North Little Rock, her attorney Mark Jesse said Thursday.

When a background check in September 2011 by the church revealed her prior convictions, Jesse said, Milam claimed the report was inaccurate and altered Lonoke Circuit Court records to show that another woman had been convicted for stealing her identity.

Deputy prosecutor Sean Strode said the forged papers included an affidavit by a Lonoke detective, Allen Miller, purporting to show that someone named Megan A. Crafton had been convicted.

Milam’s scheme was uncovered when an assistant pastor, who has since left the church, went to the Lonoke courthouse to review the records, Strode said.

It’s not clear whether Crafton is a real person. Megan Crafton is the name of a parttime cheerleader coach in Indiana who has been charged with having sexual contact with a high school student.

Milam, formerly of North Little Rock, was arrested in March. The forgery charge is a Class C felony that carries up to 10 years in prison.

Milam has convictions in Saline and Pulaski counties for forgery, theft and credit card fraud.
