100 YEARS AGO Sept. 28, 1912 TEXARKANA — The movement which has been under consideration for some time to pave State Line avenue from the Union passenger station north to the post office took on a more favorable aspect at a meeting held last night between the property owners and a committee from the City Council. The matter was discussed at length, everybody present favoring the project. The distance from the depot in the post office is about 2,000 feet. 50 YEARS AGO Sept. 28, 1962 Gov. Faubus hinted today that the possibility of racial violence being spawned by the integration fight at the University of Mississippi might spread to Arkansas and said that he “is taking precautionary measures.” The governor made the statement shortly before he was scheduled to leave for Topeka, Kan., to attend the reunion of the 36th Division. He said he would remain in close contact with his office while there. 25 YEARS AGO Sept. 28, 1987 The Little Rock School District held an orientation meeting Sunday that amounted to a cram course in teaching for 113 substitute teachers hired to replace striking teachers. “You all are not there for baby-sitting purposes,” Richard Maple, the district’s personnel director, told the substitutes. “Classroom instruction will be going on.” Among those in attendance was Diane Hawkins of North Little Rock, a certified teacher who signed up Saturday to cross the picket lines.

10 YEARS AGO Sept. 28, 2002 Strong family ties, too tight by some experts’ standards, have bound the boards of two Arkansas companies to a list of the worst in the country. The boards of directors at Dillard’s Inc. and Tyson Foods Inc. both ranked among the bottom 10 in a report published in the Oct. 7 issue of BusinessWeek magazine. The weekly publication faulted Dillard’s for having too many family members and insiders on its board. Of the 12 directors, five are insiders, including three family members, according to the latest proxy. Of the 15 members on Tyson’s board, 10 are insiders, the magazine said. Three of the 10 are Tyson family members.
