JULY 18 Smith announces at SEC media days the team will have to “move on” without Wade, tight end Andrew Peterson, receiver Maudrecus Humphrey and linbacker Tyler Gilbert, costing the Hogs their top receiver from the spring and impacting depth at three positions.

Wright and Bennett all missed substantial camp time because of various injuries.

Coach John L. Smith sounded an alarm that has proved prophetic when he said the defense would have to stay healthy.

“We can’t afford to lose anybody, because on that side of the ball we just don’t have the depth we need in certain spots,” Smith said May 23. “Knock on wood, we’ll have some luck to go with it.”

Arkansas Athletic Director Jeff Long, speaking to reporters Wednesday after his speaking engagement at the Northwest Arkansas Touchdown Club meeting in Fayetteville, said the Razorbacks won’t make excuses for injuries.

“Injuries are part of the game,” Long said. “They’re unfortunate. I feel more for those individual young men I know on our team than I do about anything else.

“They’re unfortunate, but you know what? Everybody has injuries. We’ve got to fight through them. We’ve got to play through them.

“We’ve got to compete, and I think we will.”
