100 YEARS AGO Oct. 30, 1912 PARAGOULD — For the second time within a week, 12 prisoners of the Greene county jail last night attempted to escape. They used a small piece of a saw with wire for a handle to cut bars from their cage, making an opening about a foot square. Seven of the prisoners crawled through this, but five were too large to get through. They were just ready to make their escape through an upstairs window when Sheriff Lawson arrived on the scene and locked all of them in another cell. 50 YEARS AGO Oct. 30, 1962 FAYETTEVILLE — Washington County doctors have asked the public to call off Halloween “trick or treating” tomorrow night because four cases of polio have been reported in the county in the last two weeks. Two probable cases have been reported, the Washington County Medical Society said. And, in addition, there has been an increase in cases of measles and mumps and one case of diphtheria. Dr. Paul K. Heerwagen, public health officer, asked that all nonessential public meetings be canceled.

Oct. 30, 1987 In contrast to recent actions by two public bodies, Arkansas Supreme Court Chief Justice Jack Holt Jr. quickly complied with a request Thursday by the Arkansas Democrat for a list of those applying for the job of Supreme Court clerk. Holt told Chris Thomas, executive secretary of the Judicial Department, to provide the information, which Thomas did as soon as a reporter arrived at his office. Holt’s action contrasted with those of two public bodies earlier this year, which argued names of applicants are not subject to the state Freedom of Information Act. 10 YEARS AGO Oct. 30, 2002 U.S. District Judge Bill Wilson Jr. said Tuesday he won’t hold a hearing on the role he played in the Pulaski County school desegregation case as an attorney in the 1980s. Attorneys for black students — the Joshua intervenors — had asked Wilson for a hearing so they could investigate his prior involvement. Wilson said his early role in the case was limited, he represented none of the current parties and the issue he handled has nothing to do with the merits of the case.
