––––– ––––– GLENN H. MORGAN was welcomed home by his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Sept. 5, 2013, with the words “Well done, good and faithful servant.” He joins his parents, Hiram and Lillian Morgan, and a host of relatives and friends.

Glenn was born on Nov. 28, 1927, in Merryville, La. Glenn was “born again” during a revival in McComb, Miss., in 1938. During his teenage years, he was involved in sports and worked for his uncle, spending every dime he made on flying lessons. Glenn served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and made his first solo flight during that time. The war was over before he got the chance to fly in combat.

Glenn’s brother, Jack, introduced him to the love of his life, Margaret, in 1946. A year later, Glenn and Margaret were married and had three children. The Lord continued to work in Glenn and Margaret’s life and during a Billy Graham crusade in Jackson, Miss., Glenn was called to preach. The Lord had plans for this timid young man to be His servant and for the next 50 years, Glenn was active in full-time ministry. Glenn completed a bachelor of arts degree from Mississippi College and Masters in Theology from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. In 1976, he completed a doctorate of ministry from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. During Glenn’s ministry, he pastored churches in Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas and was involved in local Baptist associations and state Baptist conventions in Mississippi and Arkansas. He loved the people he served and his fellow pastors. He enjoyed golfing and using his carpentry skills to lead several church building programs. Even nonchurch members would stop by to help “Brother Glenn” work on the church building. He also used his carpentry skills to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity.

After retirement from ministry, Glenn and Margaret moved to Sherwood to be close to family. They joined Immanuel Baptist Church and made wonderful friends in the Pairs and Spares Sunday School class. Glenn continued to serve the Lord by teaching in the Pairs and Spares Sunday School class on a rotating basis.

Glenn is remembered by those he served for his pastor’s heart, commitment to the Lord, Godly leadership, dedication to excellence, strong work ethic and unassuming ways. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved playing golf with his boys and watching grandchildren and great-grandchildren play ball. Glenn is survived by Margaret, his wife of 66 years, his three children and their spouses: Glenn Jr. and Vicky Morgan of Monticello, Ark., John and Brenda Morgan of Madison, Miss., and Beverly and Wayne Ruthven of North Little Rock, Ark. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Edna Morgan of Brandon, Miss. He leaves a Godly legacy to seven grandchildren, Ryan Morgan, Angela Birdseye, Chris Morgan, Jim Morgan, Morgan Coven, Brice Morgan, Emily Eisenach; and two step-grandchildren, Mary Frances Hemm, Melissa Coleman, their spouses and 18 great-grandchildren.

Glenn’s purpose in life was to bring glory to God. Those who knew him would say that Glenn Morgan did just that, running the race set before him with perseverance. He will be greatly missed, but we who know Jesus will see him soon.

Visitation will be Monday, Sept. 9, 2013, 9:30 a.m. at Immanuel Baptist Church Chapel. A service to celebrate Glenn Morgan’s life will follow at 10:30 a.m. A family graveside will follow the service.

Memorials may be made to Immanual Baptist Church, Little Rock, Ark., East Main Baptist Church, El Dorado, Ark., First Baptist Church, Warren, Ark., Canaan Baptist Church, Spearsville, Ark., Children’s Tumor Foundation and Arkansas Hospice. www.griffinleggettresthills.com.

Born in Manchester, N.H., in 1906, she moved with her family to Minnesota when she was two and grew up in Wisconsin and suburban Chicago. Following her childhood intention to be a teacher, she graduated from National College of Education. She then taught in elementary schools around the Chicago area, before marrying Charles W. Roth in 1936. She returned to teaching when both her children, Charles Daniel Roth of Alexandria, Va., and Margaret R. Nelson of Kennebunk, Maine, were in school. ––––– ––––– JONESBORO — Virginia Robinson Baker, 89, of Jonesboro, died at her home Friday morning, Sept. 6, 2013, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born Nov. 15, 1923, in Jonesboro to Henry Lucius and Arabella Barton Robinson, who were descended from pioneer families of Jonesboro, including the P.C. Barton family, the Mandred Robinson Family and the Rosa Loftis family.

This rich family heritage was important to Mrs. Baker, as was her lifelong, faithful membership in First Baptist Church of Jonesboro, and her membership in the Jonesboro chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution for more than 50 years.

Mrs. Baker also treasured her connections to Arkansas State University, where she received her bachelor’s degree in education in 1943. She used her teaching degree for 13 years in Leachville, Black Oak and Marked Tree, where her students called her “Our Miss Brooks.” Having no children of her own, she became a listening ear to her students while she served as a class sponsor and along with her husband, Wayne Baker, accompanied her students on their senior trips.

Another connection to ASU was Mrs. Baker’s membership in Alpha Gamma Delta, which she was active in throughout her college years and as an alumna. In later years, Mr. and Mrs. Baker were devoted ASU fans who were present at most home basketball and football games, with Mrs. Baker always proudly dressed in red. ASU honored Mr. and Mrs. Baker in 2009 as Distinguished Alumni.

Mrs. Baker left her teaching career to join Mr. Baker in the business world. Side by side, they began their partnership by establishing N. E. Ark. Fence Company. The young entrepreneurs went on to establish Baker Rentals and Sales, Baker Healthcare, W.F. and V.R. Baker Enterprises, Southwest Business Center and several other properties.

The Bakers have served as benefactors to Arkansas Children’s Hospital, Arkansas State University, Northeast Arkansas Food Bank and Craighead County Community Foundation, where they financed an endowment.

She loved entertaining in her lovely home and acted as hostess for receptions, teas and parties for various groups. Memorable occasions were a family wedding and a special 75th Anniversary Tea for the D.A.R. Mrs. Baker’s rose garden was a source of great enjoyment for her, and she also passed the time admiring the view from her family room, which included the Joe N. Martin Expressway.

Her family will remember Aunt Virginia for her kindness, her generosity and her loving ways.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Rosalee Robinson Martin and Jane Robinson; and a very special nephew, Thomas Carroll Martin Jr.

She is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Wayne Franklin Baker, of the home; sister, Marilyn Robinson Pickler of Jonesboro; loving nieces, Robin (David) Yates, Julia Martin Robinson, Liz (Tommy) Martin and Anita Pickler Manuel of Jonesboro; Jennifer Pickler of Corinth, Texas, and Karmen (Vernon) Robertson of Bucklin, Mo.; loving nephews, Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Charles D. Martin (Cyd) of Little Rock and David Anthony (Beth) Pickler, Germantown, Tenn.

A special thank-you is extended to family friend Vickie Hickey and to Mrs. Baker’s caregivers during her recent illness.

Visitation will be at 2 p.m., Sunday, in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church, followed by a celebration of her life at 3 p.m., with Dr. Bruce Tippit officiating. The private burial will be at Jonesboro Memorial Park, following the service. Services were entrusted to Gregg-Langford Bookout Funeral Home.
