What the money buys

This is the South. Did most folks expect a black man to be accepted as president in these latitudes?

The troubled health-care program is a knockoff of Republican Mitt Romney’s plan, only it was pushed by a black Democrat. Republican leadership fought it and Barack Obama from the outset. There had long been tacit agreement among them to defeat anything Obama was for, even things that were originally Republican proposals. It seems it had to be private insurers so the Republican big-money folks could make a profit from sickness and disease. If their profits from premiums paid were not required, how much less would the costs be?

Medicare is single-payer and this could have been as well. But where would Big Pharmacy and Big Insurance then have gotten the millions to pay their CEOs?

The federal website was programmed by private contractor­s, not White House operatives. The state systems that were set up seemingly work better than the federal one.

Does Walter Hussman edit this paper? Does he write the editorials? I think not. He has others who do that, and he buys up his competitio­n and hires other people to run them.

When legalized bribery by corporate interests is outlawed at all levels, we the people might then get our interests served by those we elect. Until then, we have the best government money can buy. KARL HANSEN
