Mother arrested in death of infant

HOPE — Hope police arrested a mother on a second-degree murder charge Thursday in the death of her infant son.

About 9 a.m. Wednesday, police responded to a call about a 2-month-old boy who was not breathing, a Friday news release states. The child was pronounced dead a short time later at Wadley Regional Medical Center at Hope.

Whitney G. Russell, 24, of Hope was arrested about 5 p.m. Thursday, police said in the release. She remained in custody Friday at the Hempstead County jail on $100,000 bond.

Further details were unavailable Friday, but the investigation is ongoing, police said.
