Blue Devils sparked by Sloan

- BILLY WOODS

MOUNTAIN HOME — Junior Harrison Sloan intercepted two passes, one of which he returned for an 85yard touchdown in the first half to lead West Memphis to a 49-20 victory over Mountain Home on Friday night.

Sloan’s touchdown stopped a Mountain Home threat just before halftime, and it stretched West Memphis’ lead to 30-7 at intermission.

Mountain Home backup quarterback Zane Walker, in relief of his brother Drake, who was shaken up earlier in the game and left temporarily, led the hosts to the West Memphis 20 before Sloan’s interception.

“The pick-6 was really big,” said West Memphis Coach Lanny Dauksch. “[Walker] is a dandy and he was dancing his way down the field. It could have been a two-touchdown game had Harrison not come up with that play.”

West Memphis (3-7, 3-4 7A/6A-East) bolted to a 22-0 lead after senior fullback Jarvis Cooper scored a 3-yard touchdown with 5:28 to play in the second quarter.

The Bombers (0-10, 0-7) cut the score to 22-7 on a 46yard touchdown by Drake Walker, who was injured on the play. He returned later in the second half.

Sloan picked off another Zane Walker pass on the first series of the second half to set up a 24-yard touchdown pass from Parker Grigsby to Darrell Dudley to make it 35-7.

Grigsby connected on 8 of 12 passes for 136 yards.

The Blue Devils also got touchdowns in the second half from junior tailback Quantavious Coleman and senior Demarcus Rivers, who returned an onside kick 60 yards for the final West Memphis score.

“The ball hasn’t bounced our way for most of the season,” said Dauksch. “We haven’t had the type of year we’re accustomed to, but on that onside kick it finally bounced our way. It came right up to Demarcus and he found a huge seam.”
