Riverview rallies, holds off Episcopal Collegiate

-

Riverview used two big pass plays and a stout defense to overcome Little Rock Episcopal 14-12 Friday night at Wildcat Stadium in the regular-season finale for both teams.

The Raiders took the lead with 6:32 remaining in the game when David Lee found Luke Hoofman all alone in the back left corner of the end zone on third-and-21 from the Wildcat 26.

The touchdown tied the game at 12-12. Episcopal blocked the extra point but was called for an offsides penalty. Riverview converted on the two-point play when Xavier Barrow ran up the middle.

Episcopal (8-2, 5-2 2-3A) steadily moved down the field in the final minutes as William Pollack found four different receivers during the drive that went to the Raiders 16, but an interception by Chance Woodle negated an Episcopal score. Riverview (6-4, 4-3) pushed the ball to the Episcopal 1. Despite not scoring, the Wildcats got the ball back with only 14 seconds remaining.

Riverview fell behind 12-0 and got its first touchdown on the final play of the first half. Lee was flushed out of the pocket, headed right, then launched the ball 35 yards to the front corner of the end zone. The ball was tipped twice before Bennie Watson hauled it in and fell into the end zone to cut the lead to 12-6.

The Wildcats took control early after Doug Munson intercepted Lee on Riverview’s opening drive. Episcopal drove 51 yards in nine plays as Pollack connected with Nick Becton for a 4-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was missed.

Both defenses tightened up as the next seven drives between the two teams resulted in punts or failed fourthdown conversions. With 1:04 remaining in the second quarter, Pollack completed a 33-yard touchdown pass to Harris Bethel on fourth-and-1. The Wildcats again missed the extra point for a 12-0 lead.
