Green Forest QB handles it himself

GREEN FOREST 35, ELKINS 22

ELKINS — Green Forest came up with big plays when it needed it most Friday.

Late in the third quarter clinging on to a seven-point lead, Green Forest faced thirdand-7 deep in its own territory when quarterback Treyton Anderson broke four tackles on his way to an 11-yard gain that kept the drive alive.

Four plays later, running back Carl Roberts scored from 14 yards out to seal a 35-22 victory and a conference championship for Green Forest.

“That is just Treyton,” Green Forest Coach Jay Martin said. “Elkins had everyone covered, and he did a good job of essentially running 20 yards to get that seven that we needed.”

Elkins (4-6, 4-3 1-3A Conference) jumped out a 15-7 lead in the first quarter after quarterback Tristan Ice threw a 65-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Kildow less than 20 seconds after Green Forest (82, 7-0) had put its first points of the night on the board.

“I don’t think we came out as ready to play as Elkins did,” Martin said. “But we stayed the course and some kids came out and made some plays for us.”

Green Forest tight end Clayton Watson was all over the field, finishing the game with 2 reception for 88 yards and 2 touchdowns to go along with 2 interceptions.

“Nobody has stopped Watson yet,” Elkins Coach Thurman Shaw said. “He is a dandy. You can plan for him, but sometimes you can’t plan for someone that good.”

Elkins shot itself in the foot when it had a potential game-tying 60-yard touchdown run called back in the third quarter for a block in the back. The Elks were hurt throughout the game by penalties that wiped out big plays and costly turnovers in the red zone.
