Two file as candidates for mayor of Bauxite.

- AZIZA MUSA

At least two Bauxite residents will compete in November to be the town’s next mayor.

Eddie Jones, 50, who once served as mayor, filed for the position Monday. Debbi Purifoy, 61, unemployed, turned in her paperwork for the position Wednesday. Purifoy was an alderman on the City Council from 2007-10.

Johnny McMahan has been the town’s mayor — earning $10,380 annually — since 2010. As of Friday, he had not filed for re-election.

The Saline County clerk’s office is accepting applications for all open positions in each of the seven cities until noon Friday. All mayor and aldermen positions are open, along with the recorder/treasurer position in Bauxite. Benton and Bryant’s city clerk and city attorney positions are also up in the Nov. 4 election.

So far, two people are running for Bryant city attorney: Josh Farmer, 31, and Doug Mays, 67 — both attorneys. The position is moving back to an elected office, after no one ran during the last election.

The Bryant city attorney earns $10,200 a year, although the incoming elected official can petition the council to change that amount. The current city attorney, Chris Madison, cannot run for the spot because he does not live in the city limits.

Also last week, Ken Petty, 57, who is unemployed, filed to run against incumbent Mike Kemp for Shannon Hills mayor. Kemp has served as the city’s mayor since 2010.

The Shannon Hills mayor earns $33,515 annually.

All positions are four-year terms, except for aldermen who serve two-year terms.
