Perry County 4-H’ers garner awards at State O-Rama
PERRYVILLE — Five teens from Perry County 4-H participated in State O-Rama competitions at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.
O-Rama is Arkansas 4-H’s largest state competitive event. More than 500 4-H’ers from across the state compete in various activities over the course of two days.
Elizabeth Shadell of Perryville won in the Health Illustrated Talks, which is her main 4-H project. Michael Anderson of Casa took top honors in Gun Safety/Marksmanship. Carolyn Casey of Houston placed third in Public Speaking. Aimee Anderson of Casa and Sallie Brown of Perryville placed third and fifth, respectively, in the Wildlife Identification contest.
Members of 4-H choose a main project that they are interested in and work throughout the year to learn and grow in that project area. There are hundreds of different projects.
“As members develop more knowledge and skill in their project areas, they begin competing and taking on leadership roles in their club and county to share their project area,” said Vicki Shadell, 4-H program assistant for Perry County. “At the end of each year, members are encouraged to complete and submit a record book with photos from their main project, other projects, leadership and community service.”
Shadell said record books of members ages 9 to 15 may win at the district level, and they receive awards at the District O-Rama held in June each year. Record books in the advanced group, ages 16 to 19, are judged on the state level. State Record Book winners are eligible for scholarship opportunities.”
