13 is the lucky number for economics teachers
Thirteen Arkansas schoolteachers were recognized Nov. 13 for the programs they designed to teach economic principles.
The kudos were handed out at the Bessie B. Moore Arkansas Awards Luncheon, hosted by Economics Arkansas and held in the Great Hall of the Clinton Presidential Center.
Highlighting the day’s program was a presentation — “Economics Is on the Loose With Dr. Seuss,” by honoree Deborah Shearer, a first-grade teacher at Baker Elementary School in the Pulaski County Special School District, and a handful of her pupils. Fellow honoree Kathryn JoAnne Robinson of Chaffin Junior High School in Fort Smith spoke about her in-class program, “Night: The Economics of Survival.”
Also receiving awards were Jerri Emrick of Ozark Junior High School; Allyson Barber Goodin for a program at Wynne High School; Amy L. Smallwood of Grace Hill Elementary School in Rogers; Kristina Thrift of Woods Elementary School in Fort Smith; Shelina M. Warren of Scroggins-May-Hall Gifted and Talented Center, Pine Bluff School District; Pamela Powell Conner, Elmdale Elementary School in Fort Smith; Tracy Floyd of Woods Elementary; Valarie Harp, Hartford Elementary School; Lisa Taylor, Willis D. Shaw Elementary School in Springdale; Douglas Vann of Bryant High School; and Jennifer Wiggins of Willis D. Shaw Elementary.
Wal-Mart executive Michelle Hargis Wolfe was the luncheon speaker.
Economics Arkansas was founded by Moore in 1962 as a nonprofit educational organization that teaches educators how to integrate economic and personal finance concepts into the K-12 classroom to promote economic literacy.
