Parking is disabling

-

Many handicapped parking spots have a yellow striped zone on the right and/or the left side of the space. This is to allow persons with disabilities extra room entering a vehicle. The one on the right is especially important because it allows a wheelchair-bound person to lower a side ramp to exit the vehicle. At least 10 feet is required for this.

Many people see this space as some kind of special place for their small car or motorcycle, or as a usable handicapped parking space. I have been unable to enter my vehicle at times because someone parked in the striped zone while I was out of the vehicle.

I had an unpleasant encounter with two ladies(?) the other day who had parked in the striped zone next to an empty handicapped space, preventing me from being able to use the only available space. I ran into them as they were leaving, told them they were illegally parked, and had blocked my use of the space. They declared they had a handicapped sticker and refused to listen to my explanation that provided no privilege to park in the restricted yellow zone.

I cannot believe they actually thought it was legal to park on yellow stripes—a universal “no parking” symbol—so I have to believe they just didn’t give a hoot except for their needs.

Police do not have time to enforce these laws. I would like to see laws passed that allow pictures of violators to be sent to the authorities, and tickets issued. These programs are in place in some cities. I certainly cannot hope the problem will correct itself otherwise. WILLIAM SHADLE Sherwood
